Automatic trannys
« on: December 24, 2007, 02:00:16 pm »
Looks like nobody reads Upgrades section? :?

I´d like to convert my Scirocco to automatic, currently I´m using 02A tranny.
I made 02A mountings to match Passat ones. So ´88-´96 Passat automatic (01M, 096?) would be bolt on, right? Or is there big differences in drive shafts etc? Well the mounting itself is not a big deal for me, I´ll make it fit
But there is a couple bigger issues... I see from Etka, that there is ecu for transmission :( What it needs to know? Engine speed? Throttle position? What else? Is there a possibility to convert it fully mechanic?
The second thing: Power handling... At vortex, i saw that 01M would handle 300 ft/lbs before issues arise (what about 096?). True or false? It is just enough to me, for now

I´d still drive it streets. 3 speed is not possible, too high cruising rpm´s...

automatic tranny is probably a downgrade

yep the tranny's have a bunch of wires coming from them... would probably take a lot to get it to work mechanically, or if you're good with electronics you can make a controller.

i bet there is sensors inside the tranny that tells the pressures, and so you could theoretically shift at a certain pressure point inside the tranny like a normal mechanical tranny.  add in a kick down button and you're set!  a lot of trial an error to get it working properly though...

I wish mine was a Auto as well.

If I was ever to do it I think I would search around for a donor car to take the parts off, then I would rebuild the trans and enjoy shift free driving!!

Properly strip prepped automatic would not be a downgrade. I just don´t know if it´s possible with vw trannys   I like the way how my Mopar TF904/727 works. Only driving experience from newer automatic is from a couple of e34 BMWs and those were awful :x And that was thanks to electronics with economy, sport and such buttons

So basicly what I want is: overdrive to keep cruising rpm low, 450-500nm torque handling, full old style automatic (no stupid sport, eco and such buttons  )
I´m not scared of electronics, IF stock ecu can be used (or simply bypassed)

torque converter=power loss. bottom line. CVT and DSG are pretty much the only exception AFAIK to the benefit of an auto trans.

Now that said, you are going to need to get an RPM input signal that simulates a gasser. Dunno how you plan on doing that without a TDI, or at least and AHU block with crank trigger wheel on the crank. Way more work than its worth IMHO.

Get an auto TDI if you need a heavy duty auto that bad. Otherwise you are stuck with the early MKI/MKII trans for the diesel with super high r/p ratios. Not so good on the freeway with a 3sp. HTH
