Im putting mine at the bottom of the left side air scoop in the engine bay with baffles around the intercooler to stop the air going anywhere except through the cooler. Im also going to put a decent fan on it. Im using the cooler off a Mk4 Golf TDI.

Look on eBay, there are alot of different aftermarket coolers that are very efficient and cheap.

chargecooler for me no need to put it in the air stream and short cooler pipes to reduce volume. mine was made by pace in the uk.

it seems like air/water would be a good route on this one. unless you can get a lot of air to come over that cooler somehow then i don't think an air/air would be a good idea.

I'm not sure a huge volvo or saab FMIC can fit anywhere in a conventional Vanagon setup. Libbypapa had a good idea by slicing the driver side airbox area of the Vanagon open and making an air scoop and stuffing a small side mount in there. I dig his design but I'm more for the factory look, I'd personally use a hot with key fan behind a side mount somewhere in the engine compartment, perhaps using the draft from down the driver air intake scallop and sealing around the IC (drawing air in from the scallop and down through the compartment)
Also, remember the idea is to keep the runs short to avoid inefficiencies, pressure drop, and latency.

Whichever intercooler you get, make sure it has welded-on end tanks. I had an Audi 5000 intercooler with the crimped-on end tanks that popped at only 20 lbs. Very loud, very inconvenient.

i'd like to see/hear of people using awic setups... in a vanagon water intercooling would be beneficial since you don't need as much air tubing.. just the extra water hoses & rad + fan? i'm seriously going to try it out on my car with a rad from an '06 polo...

I have one of the ones pictured above from a Volvo 740. Too big for my rig. $50 plus shipping and it's yours. I'm in Big Bear California 92314 if ya want to price shipping.
