intercooler intstall - pics too!
« on: December 16, 2007, 04:34:29 am »
well, this was my sunday afternoons work...

the IC is out of a pug 405 srdt. i fabbed up a flange/pipe joiner to go from the bottom end of the IC to the rubber charge pipe, since it simply bolts straight to the manifold on the donor car.

the intake piping is mainly the old pug stuff, cut and joined here and there.

initial results are promising - seems to want to pull harder at high revs - but i'll wait until i've made a cowling over the top and ducted air from the front through the cooler before i think about final results.

oh-  this is my new car, the 94 golf with aaz, k14. upped the fuel a bit, havnt yet touched wastegate. runs 12-13 psi only, but moves along ok. once i get my new exhaust in a few weeks (2.5" mandrel bent, inc downpipe) i'll be more enthused to up the boost.

Looks nice. Are you going to add a hood scoop?

He means to give the IC some airflow.

cool, almost looks like it belongs there. Maybe a WRX scoop would help out.

Turbo Fords from the 80's had an IC mounted over the top of the engine. They have a hood scoop. It is less than ideal and many go with a front mount. I have one of those motors in a 914 with a side mount. You can see the scoop for it in this picture. I think without a scoop or at least a duct coming from the grill your IC will do very little, if anything, and could end up being an interheater.

hey guys, sorry for the delay.... merry xmas.

i wont be adding a hood scoop - the legalities here in aus aren't worth the effort, and i dont want to wreck the lines of the car, hehe.

i do mostly fast freeway driving and havnt had a problem with heat soak.

there is very little appreciable lag compared to stock, esp now i've replaced some of the pipes with 2" stainless. pics will come soon.

i have also begun on he airflow problem - using the lower left bumper scoop, i am ducting air to the IC from the front. the advantages being that i have very short intake piping, so very little pressure drop, and no lag - important for me.

i'm getting between 45-50mpg which says a lot for having a small turbo. still running stock boost - but the fuel is turned up a reasonable amount. waiting on a muffler to come before i can have my new exhaust...
