sprockets, pulleys and belts. Helppppp!
« on: November 28, 2007, 05:06:30 am »
Could someone here coach me a bit about pulleys and belts. I am new to this engine (AAZ) and even with Bentley and Haynes I am not confident I understand everything.

I have set in place the crankshaft sprocket, the camshaft sprocket as well as the injectors pump sprocket and they seem to be at the right place. Where is the crankshaft (-damper)pulley fitting ? and how is it going to drive my water pump and alternator. Could someone show me a picture?

Thanks.

On my AAZ, there are three belts, the timing belt, the ribbed belt and a V-belt.

In this pix, you can see only the latter two:

The V-belt pulley AND the vibration damper/ribbed belt pulley bolt together with four bolts that screw into the four holes in the timing (toothed) belt pulley on the end of the crankshaft.

Here's where you're at if I understand your posting:

You have the toothed belt pulley held onto the end of the crankshaft with a bolt.  The four holes in the pulley are where the bolts for the V-belt/vibration damper assembly go.  Note that the timing belt pulley has a "pimple" on it face that has to fit into one of the smaller openings in the vibration damper pulley.  I had to try matching the damper to the timing belt pulley a couple times before I got the correct alignment for it to go together with all four bolts.

Thank you very much for your help, this pulley arrangement seems a lot clearer with your two pics. I am indeed at the toothed crankshaft pulley stage and now that I know that this is a three belt system I think that I will find my way.
Take care.

Don't forget to install the lower timing belt cover before the damper/V-belt pulley assembly.  I ended up taking that assembly off and on again.
