1.9TD Electrical problems..
« on: December 01, 2007, 03:34:29 pm »
Still having Electriacal problems..1.9TD in a MK3..

first off the tach is reading 1500 at idle UNLESS the emergency brake is on?? when the E-Brake is on the tach will not move when reving the engine but as soon as the E-Brake is let down the tach will start moving again (still reading incorrectly). When accelerating the tach will spike at redline followed by the oil light comming on, the tach and spedometer both jumping around for a second.  Also the weather just dropped below zero and now the glow plugs don't seem to be working. when you turn the key on the glow plug light will come on and turn off roughly 10 seconds later but when i go to start the car it becomes very obvious that the glow plugs are not comming on..(very hard to start)   These problems all started happening at once and im guessing they are all related, i checked and double checked all the wiring to the alt and the glow plugs, everything seems to be in order, no broken wires or bad connections. The Car is charging at 14volts.. i don't know what to check, just wondering if anyone has ever had similar problems? its -15 outside and snowing which is making me frusterated  :?

Any help is appreciated thanks in advance

Hook up a test light to the gow plug bus bar to see if the glow plugs are getting any power. That yellow light on the dash does not mean that the gloplugs are on necessarily

I feel your pain. Been having some electrical issues myself. Had to bypass my glow plug circuit and the fuel shut off circuit.

I had a similar problem with my tach and oil light acting up and it turned out to be the tensioner pulley. The bearings were gone and it wasn't keeping the belt tight. However, I didn't have any of your other symptoms, so I'm guessing it's something else, but might be worth a quick check.
