Power steering pump rebuild?
« on: November 26, 2007, 08:39:56 am »
My power steering pump is gone. It makes a lot of noise even without turning the wheel and it makes more noise while turning the wheel. I wonder if the steering rack is gone too.
Anyways, where can I get them rebuild in Toronto area? Is it worth rebuilding them? Or should I just get them from scrap? Or new?

Call me a wuss but I want it back:)
Actually my pump is not working for the first few hundred meters:) It's so hard to take the car out from the parking spots:)
Than the pump is creating enough preassure so you have about 85% functioning power steering.

yeah if you are driving a mk3 around which i am assuming by the picture then you should probably get a pump from another car.  i drive a mk2 jetta and it is tough if you arent moving but fine once you get going, i have never had the luxury, haha.  good luck.

The pic is my totaled 2000 Golf.

The pump is for my 95 Passat.

The other thing is that once the car is meant to have power steering, if you desable it, it will be way harder to turn the steering than if the car was NOT meant to have power steering.

Is your belt loose? Mine did that as well.

I personally prefer snipping the lines and ripping it out but that is on mk2s which are quite lighter

The Passat is an IDI with the AAZ engine.

I thought about the same thing...but I am afraid that the pump will seize and take the belt out. I have to look under there as I don't even know what other accessories are driven by the same belt.

I looked in te power steering reservoir and the fluid foams a lot. Is that normal?

It could be driven directly from the serp belt or it could be driven by it's own v-belt

It's not normal to have much foam at all in any PS pump. Does it leak and do you have to fill it a lot? If it's got lots of foam, it's getting air from somewhere.

I'll check the lines to see if they leak and from where.
Thanks a lot.

the steering rack pistons are probably scored...  the boots help keep dirt and debris out, but they usually wear out and crack letting crap inside to do damage and contaminate the PS fluid.  nobody really changes that, but they should every couple of years or so.
