Trying to rig a button for the glow plugs

I've searched
if there's a thread somewhere please point me to it!

I don't have the relay/control for the glow plugs. The motor is in a gas car.
Please tell me if this will work:

The fat wire going to the first glow plug gets connected to a fat switch and from the switch i run more fat wire to the battery

The head has to be grounded somewhere
When starting the car, i flip the switch on , count to twenty and flip it  off
and thats it?

It would, but I'd use a starter relay instead of a switch to control the current, then just run  small wires from the solenoid to a switch. That way you don't have a big unfused wire in the passenger compartment.

I have something like this, ford starter solenoid and a tiny momentary push button switch.  I count to about 7 though, not twenty

that is your best bet.  keeps you safe from fire hazards.

for the moment, the wire and switch will be under the hood    along with the cold start (piece of string)
i'll worry about getting it into the cabin if i ever get the thing running

I've used this setup successfully on older Ford diesels, using either a Ford glow plug relay (shown) or a Ford starter solenoid.  (same basic function, slightly different design)

I made that mistake a couple times and found my glow plugs still seem to work. Are some just more durable than others?

I've been using the ford solenoid (as pictured above) in my Samurai.

Works like a charm
