glow plug functionality

About 50% of the time when I stick the key in the ignition, the glow plug light doesn't come on.  When I try to start it, it cranks over for a while before starting.  Are the glow plugs supposed to come on before each start?  What could be wrong?  It starts fine when the light comes on and I wait for it to go out.

This is a TDI engine?

IIRC the glow plugs don't heat if the temp is above 40F

Ooops,  my bad...

I see in your post "Burnin lots of oil" you don't list a TDI--went by your Sig.

My 2006 golf TDI was destroyed by a rear end collision.   :(  I took the money from the insurance settlement and bought an 81 1.6 NA.  Plan on converting it to a TD.
