Thanks for being there for a newbie, and thanks especially to Jim in Colorado for graciously loaning me his timing tools.  (best of luck with your AAZ troubles)
    After getting the "new" pump in and timed, new glow plugs, terminals cleaned all around,  starter rebuilt, and coolant hose fixed (that I buggered while removing the starter), it fired right up and runs great.  The Jetta pump is crisper and is not rpm limited the way my original vanagon IP was.
      Now I just need air.  I noticed my friend had an IHI Kompressor sitting in his pile of stuff...

Good to hear. After I started driving my other car, I remembered it needed a bit of work, so finally got it where I don't feel scared to drive it on the highway. I have started work to get at the IDI, but I had forgotten just how much has to come off to eve get the head off. I think the cold may slow me a bit now, but the horrible mileage of my Range Rover is a good motivator. :lol:
