Looking for information on 1990 Jetta"Flair2"
« on: November 16, 2007, 04:13:58 am »
Hello  :)
maybe somebody could tell me something about this model Jetta or where I could find out a bit more. I've done a search on google but come up with little information. This forum has got me thinking more and more about rebuilding this vehicle to run for another 17 years rather than run it 'till it drops, I think I made a lucky encounter when I found this, they are becoming harder to find.

A bit of body work, new paint, rebuilt engine, pump, transmission, brakes, suspension etc. Nothing too exotic, 'Built to Last'.

I am willing to give up smoking to finance this rebuild since the only thing that p@3*$s me off with the car is the positioning of the ash tray. THAT I can fix by not smoking ........I can already see the row of gages in its' place
(OK, there's the door handles and the bus ride to 5th gear, but I've seen how I could overcome those shortcomings.)

It has sunroof, front and rear spoilers, electric mirrors, factory a/c and c/c. The only thing that didn't work when I got it was the radio!

Anything I could find out about this car would interest me, I've been a VW fan since the late 70's and have owned a 79 Rabbit (10 years) and an 84 n/a diesel (3 months!). I would like to source some trim items, window gaskets and such, that I have not been able to find so far.

Thanks  :)

My father in law also has a '90 VW Jetta Flair, automatic, gasoline.  I work on it once in a while... what would you like to know?

He has the optional sunroof, and a few upgrades on the wheels, etc.  The only problem we had was worn piston rings (over 300k so far), but it was only a days work to put new ones in.  We also replaced some other seals and such while we were at it.

Hi Don, thanks for the reply! You've already given me a lot more information than I've found so far; for instance I wasn't sure if the Flair2 was a diesel specific "package"with a funny name, a bit like the new "City" models. I have a near neighbor who has an identical beast, diesel and all, and thats about all I had to go on. Now I know that there were gas models, auto trannys, and that some of the equipment was optional (a bit like the City).

Could you be more specific about the wheel upgrades? i.e. what were they? Wheels, or brakes?: Factory options?: later model stuff that fits right on?: after-market upgrades?:..can't think of anything else at this ungodly hour of the morning but you get my drift  :)

Have you had any problemos with rain infiltration from the sides or top of the windscreen?? I thought my leak was from the sunroof. The quick fix was to stick a golf (no pun intended   ) 'brolly out through the sunroof, close the sunroof onto the shaft and wrap the seat belt around the handle to stop it from blowing away when rain was imminent; looked like a Jetta with a deerstalker hat!!
After taking off the sunroof windbreaker and taping up the 'roof to make it easier to clear away the snow, I still have water coming in from each side of the screen. I had the screen replaced this summer for better vision (an excellent investment, I think) so I don't think the screen is at fault. What about those fat plastic trims?? I suspect that they are screwed on and the rain is getting through the screw holes. My son lives in Whistler, so I know it rains in B.C., maybe your dad-in law has had this kind of leak, or maybe the fat trims were another option!

I'll be looking at your site after this to see if you have the Flair2 decals, which I might like to replace when I get a new paint job. If not maybe you could post about the details of how to do decals, unless it's proprietary information, of course!

Finally, as one newbie to an even newer newbie, welcome to the site  :D Most of my posts so far have probably been in the wrong place  :? but I've seen the mods reroute a post to the right place to help us out; all done "real cool". There's a specific 'Vendors' spot with info on how to go about it; any decals with "Diesel" written on them could be goers

If the fat trim you are referring to is the stuff that runs from the bottom on the windshield to the top of the rear window it is not screwed in. The sheet metal has notches in it that the rubber uses to attach to.

Oh yeah, my friend has a 90 jetta flair. It's red, 5 speed and a 1.8. His has a sunroof

That's neat zaprzal, thanks a lot  :D  Mine's a Flair2, but practically all the equipment is the same, I'm just missing the alloy wheels and the "prägnantes" Wolfsburg emblems.

That's exactly the stuff; I suppose I'll have to have another look next spring to see where the rain gets in. Luckily the snow doesn't get in.

Thanks everybody for all this information and great link.
