DiesOtto Now I have seen it all...

Gasoline Engine uses Direct Injection and Compression ignition sometimes....

When starting and under full load, the fuel/air mixture is ignited by a spark plug, as in a conventional spark-ignition engine (homogeneous combustion). The controlled auto ignition to which the DiesOtto automatically reverts within its working cycle occurs under partial load conditions, i.e. at low and medium engine speeds.

So it starts out Spark + Gas and them morphs into a "Diesel" using gasoline.

  Must really be something to work on..

Betcha longevity will be worse than either straight gas or straight diesel engines, too. So much complexity and precision little microbits to fail...

Nice idea, though. Supposedly this is being heralded as diesel's "coming doom."

don't worry.. it's just a concept car.  mercedes wouldn't release a problematic vehicle to ruin its reputation.  not like the vw touareg...

the idea behind it is really interesting though, but i think a diesel/propane combination would be more beneficial

Methane and it could be 100% renewably fueled. :D

lol methane... such a volatile gas!  would need to be injected at the same time as the diesel, but it would burn more rapidly.

would be cool for cow/dairy farmers!  methane injection

If driven with a light foot lol, I bet for any form of performance driving (not read the article) that is reverts to spark only mode and chugs back the fuel the same as any other car would.
Waiting for a bigger better diesel to come along.

depending on driving style really... low end it gives you mad diesel torque, and higher rpm band it gives you gasser torque (good for autocrossing i suppose)

just stay out of 4k+ rpm's and you'll get the good mileage :)

Direct injection alone would really help, I would like to try out the new TSI engines that VW has :)  It is good to see advancements like this that are allowing gasoline engines do what diesels have for the last 25 years :D

They ought to make a V8 or V4 with half of the engine a diesel and the other half a gas.  This would combine torque and power.  The only problem would be two gas tanks for each fuel.
