Proportioning valve on ABS cars?
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:29:26 am »
I thought the ABS equiped cars don't have a proportioning valve, but mine does have one.
How often do this go bad?

I replaced mine because the boot under the actuator was gone; pictures are here: http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=10620&highlight=
Picture links at the bottom of the posts.

As for their life cycle, not sure.

Thanks for pix.
How much was the prop valve?
Do you have to close the billows each time you bleed the breaks? Or only the first time you install the prop valve?

Almost $80 CDN (1990 Jetta TD). But I'll tell you, if your ride dives when you brake moderately right now, this will change that. It did for mine, anyway.
You should close the bellows every bleed. It was actually a crusty old VW mech that warned me about it. You can bleed if you don't but it'll blow out the innards because of the huge pressure generated by pressing on the pedal...and the number of times your helper will pump the pedal because nothing's coming out the bleed valve where you are....
He also warned me not to do something I saw someone else on this board recommend on doing a brake job and that was use compression fittings on the lines. IMHO: Don't even think about it. Your life's worth more than the few bucks you'll save on using them.

Cheers,
