IDI Year/Model Breakdown?
« on: November 13, 2007, 05:34:23 pm »
Hey guys, I'm new to your board (obviously) and don't even own a VW yet, but I am a huge diesel/turbo fan and have wrenched extensively on my 3 turbo vehicles (including one Cummins) over the past few years.  Now, I'm sorry if this info is somewhere on the site already, but I checked through all of the obvious sections without any luck, so please bear with me.  I've not found a good source anywhere concerning specifically which years and models of VW came with the IDI TD as opposed to the NA.  I do know the Rabbit/Jetta came with the TD sometime in the 80s and that the ECO sucks stock, but came in the 91.5-92.5 models.  Anyone have a definitive list for me?  I'm looking to buy whatever IDI turbo model that has the most mod potential for daily stuff and the occasional track day.  Thanks a lot for the help...

From what I know,
like '78 or whenever there were first the 1.5 diesels in the us, those were all na.  I thought they switched to 1.6's in like '80.  There were some '83 and '84 turbodiesel jettas, and very few '83 turbodiesel rabbits.  AFAIK, there were NA and turbo '85 and '86 jettas and golfs.  Did they stop having diesels at some point in the '80s, they didn't have diesels?  I don't really see '87s, '88s, '89's.  I think '90-'92 were NA's and TD's.

That's a pretty exhaustive list, but not quite what I need for American models/motors... Any other lists you could give me or just insight into what model might be my best option.  Thanks.

late 86 Jetta Turbo Diesel will give you a hydraulic head (no need to fit check/fit shims every 15k Miles).  You'll also have the option of fitting a 1.9 copper headgasket.

There are quite a few threads about mechanical vs hydraulic heads (true mech has slight hp advantage, but hyd requires less maintenance)

I'd try to find an early 90's MK II...preferably one made in Germany for the good build quality...there's lots in Canada!

Why an early 90's?  Anything in particular about those years?  I have found several non-turbos and a couple ECOs in the lower 48, but so far nothing solid.  Can you recommend any good sites that would advertise specifically Canadian models?  It would be a bit of a jog for me to get all the way up there, but I already own one Canadian car, so I know it's worth the trip... Thanks.

www.trader.ca
www.kijiji.ca

also check the classifieds on this site.

Toronto, Ontario normally has lotsa diesels for sale...do a search for 'diesel' on kijiji and you'll get lots of results.
