this is making me think twice about attempting to rebuild my T3. I know they are referring to generic Chinese kits, but it sounds to me like they are not advising home turbo rebuilds in general. Lets hear some other perspectives from people who have rebuilt a turbo themselves.

I've rebuilt a K03, but I didn't get the kit off of Ebay, and probably wouldn't buy one from that place.

It was simple and straightforward in execution, but then I also took my time and had rather thoroughly read through all the instructions. Prior to rebuild, there was quite a bit of play. Post rebuild, very little, but things still spun freely (I was quite liberal with my application of assembly lube).

All the parts in contact got a thorough inspection when I went through the process; it didn't look like most of the wear was on the shaft, or really anything but the bearings. I did get the shaft and wheels balanced, however, considering it good insurance after I'd already put nearly two hundred into acquiring the turbo and the kit and the few other things I needed.

[edit] And if you need the shaft straightened when the turbo is rebuilt, something is very, very wrong here.

I rebuilt my k24 with a kit from borg warner. Before the shaft was stiff to turn by hand. Now spins like a top. I will try it in a few weeks, I hope.

Out of curiosity, where'd you buy your rebuild kit? Vendor, location, site, that sort of thing.

well this is definitely encouraging. Did you have the turbo balanced afterwards?
My T3 does spin freely and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of shaft play. I'm wondering if a rebuild is entirely necessary but I may as well since its a junker turbo.

I dont know about everyone else who has rebuilt there turbo but I rebuilt my T3 and it was not too bad. The hardest thing about the whole process was getting those stupid locking rings in for the bearing, and that was just more of a nuisance.

I highly recommend them. I got my kit from them along with a rebuilt compressor wheel and would do business with them again if i needed to.

Gpopshop is definitely where I'll be getting the kit from. Dynamic seal kit #3, I assume. Did the kit come with instructions or was it more of a trial and error thing?

yeah i got the full kit and no mine did not come with any instructions. I would recommend however printing off their diagram of the turbo from there website so you can see where each part goes.

I would have to say that the writer of that review was biased.

Thats like asking a John Deere dealer what they think of a Case tractor compared to a Deere. We all know how that answer is going to come out.

If you ask them before they ship it, they'll put a printed set of instructions in the package.

Ask them after it's shipped, you get them e-mailed to you... but you'll get to play editor for a while to get it coherent.

Anyone wants a cleaned up and coherent set of K03/04/06 instructions, lemme know where to e-mail them to and I'll send them your way.

Yeah, I could tell there was a strong bias in that article. I am, however, a bit iffy about getting Chinese parts for something like this. the knockoff jeans and watches I can handle but turbos are serious business

The way he was knocking home rebuilds in general makes me think he works at a rebuild shop.

I got it from my local borg warner rep.

I posted about the kit in the general section but the images seem to have de-linked.

Here they are again.

Someone else told me that they were sold out of the kits here in Toronto. I got the address by googling borg warner and the us head office linked to the toronto rep.

Rebuilt the T3 in my wifes quantum. Got the G-Pop shop kit. Fairly easy for the exception of the snap rings which you need some pretty small assed ring pliers. I made sure not to remove the oddly shaped nut on the hot end of the turbine shaft. When I put it back together I used a digital caliper to ensure the shaft was spinning true. The turbo works like a charm. About 1 hour of labour..
