Does anyone know if this will work on my 86 golf diesel? My instrument panel doesn't have a tach, just a non working clock. What has to be hooked up for the tach to work? Do i even have the right plug for this to work??

Yes it would work. It is plug and play.

CE1 is 89.5 and earlier and has two prongs.
CE2 is 90 and later and has one prong.

Just ensure your alternator has a terminal labeled "W" with a wire connected to it... without the W signal the diesel tach won't be of much use.

Swapping the guts of the cluster is very easy. It takes me about 30 minutes but I've done it a few times
