scored a gt 1749 va turbo in the junk yard for free , has a small bit of play in shaft , going to have a look at the vanes and then make it fit my 1z exhaust man , what max hp could i get out of this turbo
170-180bhp in the 130 tdi's.
It is a triangle 3 bolt flange, but at an angle, you'll see, unlike the 1Z manifold. Imagine the flange rotated 30 degrees or so...
If you get a photo of a gt15 you'll see what I mean, either the compressor will foul the firewall or the engine itself.
As you have the turbo on its own, separate to the manifold, i'm thinking you got it out of an a4 or passat (not a T5 5cyl)? Get the manifold aswell
Hi aidan going to re drill my 1z man to fit the gt1749 , i have 2 spaire 1z engines to play with, the guy with the vnt 20 said i want £325 for that turbo so i just left it , have you seen

I've noticed merc turbos have similar flanges to VW, but I was put off by the downpipe and compressor outlets, and the need for custom pipework.
I think the passat PD130 turbo is just about perfect in that the compressor outlet is the same, the downpipe flange matches a mk4 downpipe (or mk3 afn one if you could find one), and its makes enough reliable power as you could reasonably expect from an AHU or 1Z.
How are you going to control the vanes? I've been considering just a spring under the actuator bracket on one end and attached to the lever on the other, dunno how i'd fix them though
