95 Passat TD doesn't shut off from the key
« on: October 26, 2007, 12:39:03 pm »
What could be wrong? Where should I start? How do I check it?

I think it's the fuel cut off valve (or whatever it's called) but can it be anything else?
How do I check it?

It's either the fuel cut-off on the pump or the ignition switch. 95% chances it's the solenoid on the pump.

does it intermittently turn off? or has it just stopped working? (jammed solenoid) ???

It never shuts off by key. Every time I have to stall it.

Just pull the the wire off the stop solinoid to see if its a solinoid or electrical issue.

grab a switch from the surplus and solder it in line on the wire to the solenoid. activate it under the hood or maybe get it in the cabin, or fix the problem

Ok, I checked the voltage and the solenoid.
I took the solenoid out and if you put voltage on it pushes the thing out. If there is no voltage the spring inside the housing will push the rod/stop back in. The rubber cap is cracked, could that be the issue?

When is there supposed to be voltage to the solenoid?
When the engine is running or only when you shutoff the engine for a few secs. I assume there is no voltage while the engine is off.

Right now, I am pretty sure that the solenoid is doing it's job but it's the wire...rest of the system, that is not working. Maybe ignition switch? How do I try that?
Anybody has a bentley for sale? :)
Thanks for your help guys.

Dumb me:) I was playing with the other one. Towards the front of the car. What is that?

The wire to the REAL shut off solenoid is pretty messed up, but it receives voltages. But it is a real PITA to take it out :( And it started raining and I gave up.

The solinoid on the side of the pump use to control dynamic pump timimg.

Does the shuttoff solinold have battery voltage with the key off ? If so then there is no need to remove the shuttoff solinoid.

I think that is the problem. Not the solenoid. Driving back home tonight, the engine just shutoff while driving. The wire to the solenoid came loose and broke. As soon as I put it back the car started.
So it is the fact that there is voltage on the solenoid all the time. And this is why the battery gets drained (not the stereo as the previous owner told me)
How can I check the ignitions switch, how can I FIX it???

Also, when I slow down, arround 20kmh I hear a relay clicking on and off in the center console behind the ashtray. Can it be speedo related?

I'm going to mention the blue wire because no one has.
In the Rabbits, if they don't shut off, it is sometimes caused by the blue wire connected to the alternator creating a current, sending enough of it back to the injection pump stop solenoid.
I think you can find more info on this by doing a search on the vortex for blue wire.
I'm not sure the A3 could have the same problem but the cure was a diode in the blue wire.

I tried doing a little searching over there and didn't see anything under blue wire that would help.

The ign switch and terminals had melted on my dads 95 passat due to loose conections so you could have a similar issue. The clicking behind the console is probably the relay used to crontrol the egr and wastegate as my dads car makes the same clicking noise until we got rid of that stuff.

Yeah, I hate EGR. It leaks oil arround there anyways.
I guess I have to open the steering column covers to check the ignition switch.

Damn thing started to work by itself. :)
Last night I cut the ignition and I was getting ready to stall it, and the ignition switch cut off the engine...
At least it works now:)
