Injector rebuild cost

I was wondering how much sense it makes to rebuild your injectors and get them calibrated versus buying remanufactured ones.  If you follow the procedure http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=28 here, you can will still have to purchase new nozzles and send them to the diesel shop for calibration/shim adjustment.  So ultimately my question is would the price of new nozzles ($60 USD or Canadian) plus the service be equal to or less than $200 for remanufatured injectors ready to put on?

The guys at Garmon in McDonough, GA told me that they don't build injectors this small, but they would probably be able pop test them.  I didn't ask for a price.  As you probably already know, they are some of the best Cummins guys in the country.

Where are you planning on getting your nozzles?  I need to rebuild a set, too.  Some day, I'll build that pop tester.

Great question... I'll be very interested to see some costs posted.

I personally never shopped around... the pop tester cost me all of 30 bucks to build, I'm naturally wary of the "craftsmanship" of others when things need to be "calibrated", and I wanted to play with different nozzle types, breaking pressures, etc.

But yeah,  for the person who needs to replace their nozzles every 60-75K miles buying rebuilt nozzles is certainly a lot easier, and perhaps not much different in price.

Even if you build the pop tester yourself, what about replacing the shim washer to adjust the breaking pressure?  Are different sizes of those readily available?  It just seems like quite a hassle for saving maybe fifty bucks.

I guess I'd say that one man's hassle is another man's Do It Yourself Fun... nothing wrong with either perspective IMHO

I personally don't do a lot of the things I do on my car/house/yard/etc to save money... I do it because for me it's fun to figure stuff out.

The Bentley is full of "repairs are best left to a qualified VW mechanic"... the IP, the injectors, etc etc etc... almost like a challenge to prove them wrong ?!

I pay $35.97 ea. plus a $10 refundable core charge for rebuilt Injectors.

Halsey Import Parts, Portland, OR.  Pretty hard to beat.
