What is my Passat?
« on: October 26, 2007, 07:14:04 am »
Hi All,

Brand new to dubs and diesels, but having fun so far.  I hope this question isn't too stupid, but have spent the last 2 days trying to find out if my 1993 Passat 1.9 is a TDI or IDI.  Depending what I read and where I look I get different results.  I have looked at the code in the trunk and says AAZ.

What is the answer?  Take it easy on me!

At the same time, there is a vacuum (boost in this case) nipple on the top of the intake, that has a hose that is clipped and capped.  I am trying to figure out where it used to go.  What I have read suggests it is to run to the MAP sensor in the ECU, which  can't find.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ian

AAZ is fully mechanical IDI. There is no MAPs or ECUs with it. Is there a hose  from intake to injector pump? There should be.

Thanks for the reply.  Perhaps the Mod can move this to the IDI section then.

To answer your question, no, there is no line to the pump from the intake.  Where abouts does it hook up? (if you know).

For my info, how does the AAZ differ from the TDI?  The injectors are right on the side of the block.  Is it not directly into the cylinder?  It there some sort of pre-chamber?

Thanks again.

That nipple on the intake is just capped, nothing was attached there from the factory.

Thanks for the help!  Guess I will just use the nipple for a boost gauge!  Car has 266k, drives very well.  Only rust on bottoms of doors and trunk, rest of body and under is mint, really amazing for this part of Canada.  Have spent the first week fixing a the things that were not working - gas/temp gauge, radio, central locking, antenna, defrost and replaced 10 burnt bulbs.  AC has been dead since warranty ran out and still need to replace passenger side mirror.  I gave the engine a bath, and adjusted the fuel to up the idol a bit and make it more driveable. I am the second owner, and have always wanted to get into the VW diesel scene, as we drive 220km per day for work.  I am AMAZED at the room inside this vehicle.  Basically if we drive it for 8 months, it will be essentially free car.
