1.9TD into A2 question
« on: March 05, 2005, 07:56:20 am »
Local scrapper has a 1.9TD with 100,000 km's on it, coming out of an accidented car that seems to of been well maintained. This may be my chance to upgrade from 1.6D to the 1.9TD. My Jetta body is still like new and is worthwhile keeping in my opinion.
What's involved in this retrofit? Will my present tranny bolt up or would the '95's TD tranny be better. I think the trannys are totaly different though with the reverse being in another location?
Thanks for your time,
Hugh

I'm driving a 92 Jetta with a 1.9TD. As far as I know, the 1.9 is basicly a 1.6 bored and stroked. Should bolt right in.

Thanks for the info Patrick, you know, been doing some more research this moring and will stick with my original plan of locating a motorless GTI to convert to GTD after all. Might as well end up with the little hot rod I have always wanted. Anyone know of any GTI's with motor problems for sale cheap? Looking for real straight / clean body. Will probabably stick with '93-'97 model unless I find a totaly set up '90-'92.
Thanks,
Hugh

the 1.9L block is taller, to accomodate the longer rods (and stroke). This will result in your downpipe sitting in a somewhat higher position. If it's all factory exhaust parts, it shouldn't be an issue. You could use either transmission. I recommend using whichever has taller gearing.

Been boucing this around all day, what's involved in taking a gas GTI and dropping in the 1.9TD?
Is the gas tank an issue? Probably best to use the diesel filler tube, was wondering about fuel pumps etc. On a EFI the pump is in the tank but on mechanical diesels I think relies only on the injection pump right?
Sorry if I am green but have never really gotten into my '92 except maintenance issues and rustproofing / cleaning.
Thanks,
Hugh

While on the engine swap topic does anyone know if an A3 subframe would bolt into an A2.I'm putting a 1.9 in place of my 1.6  and I would prefer using the A3(1.9) right rear motor mount setup so I would need to change the subframe to use it, if it would bolt in then I'll go that way if not I'll live with it

I suspect that the GTI's in-tank pump wouldn't mind pumping diesel, and that  it might even prove to be an advantage. I think you'd have to change the whole tank if you wanted a diesel filler neck, as they're one piece. I personally wouldn't bother changing anything. I bet it'd work just fine. I removed the big water seperator under the car some time ago, and haven't suffered at all. (at least, not from water problems!   )

Andy, I've been running my 1.9 on the original A2 subframe without any problem. Are those mounts really any different? Old A2 subframe-to-body bolts have a nasty tendancy to snap off when removed!

Not sure about the fuel pump in the tank. Two experiences:

1) A Looooong time ago, carbed engine into injected rabbbit (gas). way too much pressure, major flooding, wound up just pulling the fuse and the car ran fine. Mechanical fuel pump didn't mind drawing through the electric pump at the back.
2) 354 perkins into 88 3/4 ton GMC. Electric pump in the tank worked okay, made it real easty to prime the system, (just turn the key on) but ran too long and tended to burn out. Also caused too much timing advance because the pump read fuel pressure as well as engine speed. Anyone know if this is the case with the Bosch pump? The electric pump puts up a lot of pressure...........
I wound up eliminating the electric pump in the truck.

Well after more thinking decided to build up the '92 Jetta instead due to time / money issues. I know the car well and it has been rustproofed by me. Needs minimal bodywork to be as new. So I'll be dropping in a turbo when the 1.6D dies, if ever. In the meantime I'll be buying used performance parts and will be setting it up as I go along. ( lower / stiffer susp. rear discs, etc. )
Which TD should I be looking into?
What are good / bad points of both the 1.6TD and the 1.9TD?
I got a feel here that the 1.6 revs more?
An intercooler will be in the picture also.
Thanks for all your patience as I'm new to this.
Hugh
