What gasser parts are worth keeping?
« on: October 23, 2007, 03:03:17 pm »
I just purchased an '85 Cabriolet.  It has a 1.8 K-jetronic fuel injection.  Unfortunately, the car has to pass emissions for another 3 years, so it'll have to stay gas until then.  When I do change out to a Diesel, what gasser parts are worth having?

I see the oil cooler is on this gasser.  I haven't pulled the pan, but I'm about to refreshen it.  Does the 1.8 gasser have piston squirters?

The PO dropped a washer into the intake and started it for a few seconds.  I have the head off, and actually, it did surprisingly little damage.  The block still has crosshatch in it and NO RIDGE!  It's surprisingly nice.

Anyways, does anybody know where I could get some 81mm diesel pistons?  That's the bore of the  1.8 gasser.  I was wondering how hard it would be (or impossible) to put a 1.9TD head on it and make it a diesel.  I'm guessing the blocks are the same, but the 1.6 has thicker cylinder walls.  The strokes are the same, and the VW 1.9TD has longer stroke.  I'm guessing they found the that that block couldn't be bored that much and still be reliable as a diesel.  I see 1.9TD heads on Ebay frequently.  I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting about.

I know.  Drop a 1.9TD in and be done with it, but those are a little hard (and expensive) for a Georgia boy.

In all honesty, not much of a gasser engine is worth a damn on a diesel (except the alternator and water pump). I guess you could reuse the clutch and tranny.

4.5mm oversize pistons for a 1.6 (81mm) is probably not going to happen. 81mm is also 1.5mm oversize for a 1.9D engine's pistons, too.
