It wasn't suppose to be a diesel, but I convinced him it was the way to go.
He started with a motorcycle engine, gave up on that when it came to mounting the tranny, then he wanted a 16v but all those wires... so I traded him one of my spare 1.6NAs. A nice strong engine perfect for taking a beating in the bush. It's currently hooked up to a diesel auto box for simplicity (shifter linkage) but he plans on throwing in a close ratio 5 speed.

Hopefully he will join soon and add more to this thread. Him and 3 friends are building it. You'll notice some not-so-nice welds, that was my brother teaching his friends how to weld. -

as tyler said, we started with a bike. Suzuki temptor gr650.
this is whats left of it now...
anyone looking for a project bike :wink:
we started with seats, figuring they're one of the more important parts, next to the engine and wheels. (actually its all we had to start with)
...yup, thats high quality bed frame :lol: heck, i figured it was only a lighweight kart at that point so i wasn't going to complain with free steel.
had i known we'd give up on the bike and switch to a car engine i wouldn't even have considered it.
heres the layout we planned with the 650
i guess it could have worked if we used an auto tranny. the clutch would be putting pressure on the motors output shaft all wrong this way.... easier to just use the engine that bolts up to the tranny :lol:
tyler hooked us up with the engine from this
and after a few weekeds during the summer this is where its at now
that civic wishes it was as cool as the kart
its all thrown together with bedframe and 1" electrical conduit for now, pending strong steel.
It does roll under its own power, we've had it on a few quick rips down the block. great fun but stopping an auto without breaks isnt.
anyway, i look forward to you comments and suggestions. if you have questions ask away, i'll try to keep this updated as we go along.
maybe get some more vids of the thing in action

so no real progress lately, not fun working when its so cold out.
we're going to stick with the auto till we get the rest done and the 5 speed will go in much later as an upgrade. so since were going to run with the auto for now i figure i might as well be nice to it and give it a new screen/filter and some new fluid. i have no idea what type of fluid it takes though. anyone know?

Depending on how you are going to use it, I'd beef up all the metal I think. It's hard to tell exactly what was used, but it looks a bit thin to me. Roll cage needs cross braces, triangles are strong, squares are very weak. Very cool though.

I gave him one of my old roll cages from a rabbit that he is going to fabricate in. It's like 1 3/4" steel pipes, probably 3/8" walls on it. Serious business

as tyler said, that cage is getting cut off and the one he donated will take its place, it'll be nice and sturdy when done. that is if it ever gets done. :lol:
projects always take longer then you first imagine they will eh.

so we had an oil leak from the dipstick i wanted to fix, should be an easy fix i though....yeah right, that sucker was in there good, we got it out most of the way but it was stuck on the last few inches. I really didnt want to have to drop the pan to get it out so we tried our best to pull it, even using a huge chain to tug with but all that did was mangle it. after we gave up we did what anyone would do, ask their brother for a new one :lol:
he said we could have the one from his old engine, so it was decided we'd pull our pan to get our ruined one out and use his. sounds simple again, well of course his wouldn't come out either. so we pulled his pan as well but that didnt help, that sucker was stuck for good, we gave up and stole his windage tray for our kart
. we decided our dipstick could be salvaged since after we got it out and straightened it the stick would still go in and out.
While the engine was out of the kart and on its side we did the tranny screen as well, its probably a good thing we did because we found a screw in the bottom of the pan. its for the screen cover thing, it must have come loose and fallen out at some point.
anyway heres some pics...
having it on its side like that made things really easy
here you can see how bad the dipstick was bent
this WAS supposed to show all the dirt that was in the the tranny but the camera isnt really good enough
and of course i forgot to take a pic of the windage tray but im sure you all know what that looks like anyway.
also forgot a pic of the roll cage.

haha wow that looks safe, something that can go 75mph made out of bed rails and conduit. hahahaha i want a ride. where are the burn out videos? they better arrive soon, real soon. even just driving videos. is that actually a diesel trans? the diesels go into neutral when you let off the gas. "economy"

Yeah it's a true diesel tranny. I expect this to be done over Christmas, not that I have any say in it :lol:
