choice of turbos....
« on: October 22, 2007, 01:09:52 pm »
For my GTD I have a choice of turbos

1 - my current water cooled K14, holding up but would benefit from a rebuild
2 - a very good non water cooled K14 - from a 2.4 A6 audi
3 - a very good water cooled T2

I'm being swayed towards the T2 but it looks smaller, I'd always believed it was comparable to the K14

Any thoughts?

T2 gets the vote from me. Very reliable for an oil cooled turbo.

Are the internals the same? Trim, A/R etc?

god knows! what am I looking for

the K14 is about twice the size of the t2 - I thought they were the same spec from different manufacturers?

thinking about hybriding the two k14s as they are quite different animals

If the tags are still on the turbo's you can look up the spec's on them.  From what I have read here, turbo's can be very different by vehicle application even though they appear the same.  Example would be the difference between say a T3 from 88 vw gasser and a 88 vw diesel.  They might have a different A/R on either the compressor or the turbine, or the trim may be different.  All of which would effect how it would spool up for you.

Do you have the information about what vehicles these came off of? Year, etc..
