Transmission differences?
« on: October 19, 2007, 09:10:51 am »
I have a 98 Jetta and the reverse is just about gone out of it. (Idler gear or something).  I have a 1.6 trans out of a 91.  Will it bolt up without a problem?  Use the same clutch as the 1.9 trans?  Any help would be great.
Thanks

Could be IDI, they were selling both for a few years. I've seen a 97 with a TDI too.

Well mine is a 98 IDI.  Look up any parts and they list to 98 in Canada only.  The US had the TDI in 97 I think in Jetta/golf.

ANYWAY.................its a IDI and will the 1.6L trans fit up to it?  It is the one out of that 91 Jetta that you sold me Andy.  I am going to do it in the next few weeks and want to order the stuff I need for it.  Like a new clutch and a drive shaft.

Any info??

i would imagine that you would need to swap over the flanges from your transmission to the 1.6 transmission (not too hard, but can be a PITA)

going from a '96 jetta TD tranny to a '92 1.6TD, the difference is sticking out about 1-2 inches from both sides while using the '96 flanges.  the trans housing is the same, so swapping to some older 1.6 flanges made it work.  now hopefully this tranny works good  :?

The older trans will bolt up fine and work provided that it is the 020 style trans with cable operated clutch. You'll have to swap the speed sensor and as long as the drive axle flanges are the same then you should be good to go

So it looks like I may have to swap the axel flanges from the 1.9 trans to the 1.6.  The 1.6 has the cable clutch.  Do the flanges just unbolt?

I had the same issue, replaced the reverse idler and buttoned it back together:

I have a couple really good links here:

Do you have a 020 or a 02A in your car right now?

Yup, I think you will find your current car has an 02A transmission, and your 1.6 donor is a 020.  They are quite different from a swapping perspective... the 02A has a hydraulic clutch and cable shifters, the 020 is a cable clutch and linkage shifter.

This implies that your pedal cluster in the car will need to change, and the shifter housing, and....

No doubt it's been done... just a matter of how much time you want to spend.

However, you can use the 020 reverse idler in the 02a
