WTB: A1 instrument cluster
« on: October 16, 2007, 02:56:55 pm »
Looking for an A1 diesel instrument cluster with a Speedo that goes above 85mph,  I've seen ones that go up to 100 and I have a feeling that they were out of Jetta td's.  If you have one for sale please let me know.  Thanks.

I think the gasser speedometers went higher, the GTI to 120?
They would be real easy to swap into your cluster.

yeap, that can be easily done. The cluster i had in the old "GTD" was a GTI speedo swapped into a diesel cluster as well as a 7k gasser GTI tach. I also had a friend make some really nice overlays for it, white with the corrected diesel rpm's on the tach (non modified gasser tach...i used it with Roger Browns Optical tach interface), the "running bunny" symbol and "GTD" in print on there as well...looks really sharp

I still have it if you were interested. I could dig it out for a few pics...

Otherwise, the speedo swap from a GTI would easily work and I think it was 110 or 120mph.

yes, I am very interested, please shoot me a few pics at estimatd@hotmail.  thanks for the info.

the reason that I am looking though is because I am a bit particular and I would like to find one that says diesel fuel only, similar to the one below.  Sorry for the small pic and to the person that I stole the image from....

I know that the tach is from a gasser but I am looking for that speedo specifically.  thanks!

Pretty sure you will be looking for a long long long time.... A1 diesel clusters with tach are very very very rare.... no really... they are rare.

Most people convert a gasser tach cluster to be diesel compatible, or run an aftermarket tach... VDO make several.

One gasser cluster I've seen was modified to read "Unleaded Fuel Sucks" as opposed to "Unleaded Fuel Only"...

Not the greatest pic...one i found quickly here. I can take another of course.

redline was pulled back closer to 6k as I had modified the pump with the gov. mod and it was a pretty built motor, so I was able to pull close to 6k out of her.

They are white faced overlays on the stock GTI tacho and 120mph speedo into the diesel cluster. Even the glow plug and dummy lines were accounted for :) and it does read "Diesel Fuel Only" as well.
They are not faded or anything of the sort. As a matter of fact...if I look around, I probably have another spare pair I could possibly throw in with it. A friend in Pittsburgh had made them for me...
Its not stock faces...so if you want that...this wouldn't be it...they lit quite nicely though and I do like the visibility that white gauges provide...especially in older clusters that don't illuminate well.

Tach is not a modified one at this point. Its the stock gasser tach that I was running via Roger Brown's Optical tachometer system (I still have, not currently using though).
It could EASILY be modified via the gasser tach -> diesel/w terminal conversion in the FAQ on the site here...

I do not know as I haven't heard from him in a long time and I'm not sure whether he is still making them. Lost touch when I moved and was offline for quite a while.
I think his were only mk1 ones though...

thanks, what I am looking for specifically though is that 100mph speedo that says Diesel Fuel Only, I'm not sure which clusters they came in and I'm sure I could probably find one with out a tach in it as the one pictured above looks like it has a gas tach installed, actually it looks like a gasser cluster with a diesel speedo installed.  if you notice the center bezel, it belongs to a gasser and it doesn't have the yellow light for the glow plugs.  anyway the point is, I don't want an 85 mph speedo in my tdi converted caddy, and I don't want a speedo that says unleaded fuel only so I have to find that speedo.....

Thanks for the pic.  I'm looking for the factory look for mine but I just picked up one of those Optical tach systems as well so it may be easier for me to just use your cluster.  Did the tach seem relatively accurate?  How much do you want for the cluster?

it worked great... I loved it and no worries about vbelt slippage, worn pulleys, etc.

The only reason I'm not using it is that I have the early style cluster in my mk1 (79) and plan on retaining it. I may or may not use the optical setup...i still have it...just haven't used it in a while. Extra "stuff" in the bay and being serpentine now, I may run a "W" terminal connection....

PM me if you are interested and give me an idea of what your willing to pay, I hadn't given it consideration in selling it prior to your post.

I've been thinking about it and I think I'm going to stick with the OEM look, thanks for the offer but it looks like there are some other people who may be interested in buying it so it shouldn't be hard to sell.

If anyone has that 100mph speedo like the one pictured above please let me know....
