quick Question about bolt patterns again...
i want to put a 6 speed tranny onto my 1.9 diesel golf (93). i know that some come on newer VR6 (mark 4)
-- did VW make any 6 speed manual trannys for mark 3 or earlier? and would this or a newer 6 speed tranny from mark 4 fit my diesel motor (with regard to bold pattern etc)
also would you recommend this or would the diesel ware prematurely?
would this be an ideal way of lowering RPMs at higher speeds?
Thanks!

Nice plan! I would like to do this, too.

No. The bolt patterns are different.

No problem with wear, and yes, it is an ideal way to gain fuel economy...but at a cost of performance, of course! :?
There is a 6 speed manual in the new Jetta GLI, mated to a 1.8 turbo 4 cyl gasser. Would that bolt up to a TDI?
Yep, any 6-speed bolted to a 1.8t will fit. Only problem is the gear ratios would not be fit for a diesel, ratios are really close and the final drive is too high for real efficient highway driving. On the TDI club list, SVTWEB had a euro-TDI 6-speed transmission installed in his TDI jetta. That would be ideal, but good luck getting one in the states.

I have a source for a new 02M 6 speed transmission for a diesel. They are like $2500 last time that I checked. I have the ratios around here somewhere.
Do the O2M's use the same axles as an O2J or O2A? My only concern about switching is the downtime I'd have if I broke one...

Guess whos moving to Ramstein Germany!

i have an audi a4 and am interested in putting in a tdi...
its a 1.8t so the tranny should bolt up, but then u run into the problem of.... gear ratios... my 1.8t spins 2700 at 60 and 3700 at 80... not great for fuel economy...
my thought is.... the 1.8t and the v6 trannys are the same in the audis, and i know the v6 has better gear ratios ..... so i'm wondeirng if that'd work
anyone know of anyone thats put a tdi in an audi?

Nice idea, but a big problem with the A4 is that the engine is mounted north-south, almost like a RWD car, which is just like the Passat. While the engine isnt really a big deal, you would have a hard time finding a transmission that would work properly, as you would be stuck with the automatic that came in the Passat TDI here in the states, unless there was a manual-transmission option in the euro-Passat TDI's. Failing that, a Quantum tranny might work!!

why wouldnt the tdi bolt up though? the motor mounts might be a problem... but i dont see why the motor cant be bolted up north south instead of east west

I think your only American option would be the engine/transmission from the 04 Passat TDI, but they were only offered in automatic. Might be some other options overseas, but I'm not familiar with what the Passat/A4's were equipped with elsewhere.

what about the audi TT AWD trans, the gear ratios dont seem to bad, but I havent done any rpm calcs for it. i might have a line on one of the 6 speeds for the TT with a 1.8 Turbo gas engine.
what CV joints does it use and can anyone get new ones? and I would probably need to get a slave cylinder for my 82 caddy.
does any one see any other issues that I might run into?

Hi Guys,
I know a little bit about this 6-speed mated to a diesel idea. Almost a year ago I imported a PD-150 engine and 6-speed tranny from England. It was a big PITA! It is possible to import just the transmission, and will be a lot easier than doing an engine. With the engine, you gotta get past the EPA (even if you don't have emissions inspections in your county/state) when is comes through customs. It's possible, but I would recommend seeking someone who specializes in importing these parts to get a good deal. It cost me almost $1200 for freight, customs fees, customs broker, etc. That didn't include the massive amounts of paper work (Power of attorney, customs forms, contracts, etc.) cost of the engine ($1200), transmission ($1000), specially coated wood crate to get past the USDA($100), instrument cluster, key, ECU ($250), etc. There's also the fact that you'll be wiring money internationally (the shipper won't take PayPal), etc. Like I said, find someone who specializes in it.
As far as the transmission goes, like was said previously, any 4-cylinder O2M should work. The VR6 bellhousing is different, so don't even bother. (It is possible to swap the bellhousing, but it's something like $700 from the dealer.) The TDI-spec O2M does have different ratios than the 1.8, VR6, etc., so that's the one you want. If you need these ratios, let me know, and I'll go try to find them.
As far as installing the tranmission, you'll need custom mounts if you're installing it in a MK1, MK2 or MK3. There's a guy on VWVortex who might make and sell some. You'll also need to have a hydraulic clutch, or buy a conversion kit to adapt your cable-clutch car to this transmission. The axles for it are bigger, so that'll require some custom work. It's also a cable shift transmission, so get ready to put holes through your firewall for that.
I know installing the 6-speed can be done, but it's a lot of work. If you could get the transmission cheaply, and were good with a welder, and custom fabricating, it might be worth it. I don't think there's any way to justify it from a fuel savings standpoint.
I've dealt with Peter AKA VW4motion on tdiclub.com and he can get you this sort of thing. I think you are looking at around 3-3.5kUSD for a full 6spd swap to TDI. He was good to deal with (took 6 day to get a vnt-17 to me that was reman'd with a 1 year warranty) for $600 LESS than the local VW dealer want for a vnt-15...anyway give hi a shout if you want a pain free experience.
PS ?I also paid no tax or duty, don't ask me how but he said he makes it happen with no tax or duty in 99.999% of the sales.
I bought a quattro (haldex) kit from audi TT 2001 6-speed (1.8T225HP), I intend to mix with my TDI engine, I tried to find the ratio of this tranny and I do not find better than this:
These ratio seems to be for 2 WD
6 Spd A4 2001> 1.8T & 1.9TDI : 3.50 1.89 1.32 0.93 0.73 0.58 FPP FTT 37/9 (4.11) R&P.
