« on: October 13, 2007, 12:46:13 pm »
Alright guys,  Trying to get more info on the engine and gubbins in the car but as its from Japan all the books are in Japaneese, poo! :?

Car is a '91 1600td.  Where can I get the engine code from?  What model turbo and BHP should I have?

Thanks

Treat me like I'm thick and we won't go to wrong!! :D

10 quid says you have an MF engine with either a Garrett T3 or KKK K24 turbo and 68 hp.

However, lets do this scientifically... look for the engine code cast into the block... it's usually on the passenger side of the engine in the vicinity of the injection pump.

To confirm what turbo you have you'll need to spend some time with a flashlight and perhaps a mirror.... somewhere on the inlet side of the turbo (or cast into the turbo itself) there will be a manufacturers designation.

If you're serious about learning about the engine and the car round up the Bentley service manual.... the official bible of VW diesels.

I guess thats what I should be building up to then as said tongue in cheek.

Aren't Bentleys just available in the states?  I'm a UK dubber and would defo be interested in getting one.

I'll have a look tomorrow Vince, what tag do I want to have on the turbo?  Best scenario?

Either turbo is fine and dandy... no worries.

Amazon.co.uk has the Bentleys:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Volkswagen-Cabrio-Service-Manual-1993-99/dp/0837603668/ref=sr_1_1/202-2636553-2236632?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192297259&sr=8-1

And yup, could be a JR too... MF is a bit of a North American answer.

I'm a uk dubber and I got my bentley from Amazon, it wasn't really much good for me though.

I find the mk1 golf diesel NA manual from haynes is of more use because I've got a mk1 caddy. It's not for turbo motors but they are essentially the same, besides the Bentley didn't cover the GTD lump which I run.

All my 1.6TDs had K14  turbos, they all make about 70 bhp except the GTD which is quoted at 80.

What is the main problem with the Bentleys then cheeseman?  Is it a lack of diesel info or other stuff.  Not too fussed about any info on anything else other than the engine and perhaps a little wiring, a shocks a shock an exhaust an exhaust etc and have a good knowledge of most of the car just the main lump!

Thanks for the link Vince, i'll have a look after cheeseman gets back to me (hopefully)

who said it has an IC?If it has then it's an RA or a SB GTD lump (not covered by Bentley - despite what some retard wrote in the review section of the Amazon website, the review that made me bite the bullet and buy the manual.

I've absolutely nothing against THE manual, they are very good but it's for a MK2 Golf with a TD engine

I run (in effect) a Mk1 Golf with a GTD engine - so the manual doesn't cover bodywork, electrics, suspension, interior etc for my ride and also I discovered after buying that it doesn't cover my motor either.

Not much use  :( , flogged on eBay for near enough what I paid for it :D

I've got a load of manuals/wiring info on PDF if your interested....
