Serious Leak Around #1 Injector - Somewhere
« on: October 10, 2007, 08:50:06 am »
Got to work this morning (well, almost to work) and could smell raw diesel fuel. When I pulled into my parking spot, there was a bit of smoke coming from under the hood (not to mention a nice trail of diesel where I had driven) and when I lifted the hood, there was a serious leak around the #1 injector or its line (the one nearest the timing belt). Not sure where it is coming from, and it's hard to poke around in my good work clothes (shirt and tie, dress pants). My wife takes a dim view of that.

After letting the car sit (I had shut the engine off after having the quick look under the hood) there is a huge wet spot under the car and by huge, I mean about 2 feet in diameter. I'm guessing it was pushed out from the pressure in the lines.

Going to try to drive it home today (about 30 miles) and then to my mechanic (another 40 miles) tomorrow.

Note, I said try. I'll post results of the drive (besides dumping copious amounts of diesel) and causes/fixes as they become known.

Before I wrecked my car I was loosing 200kms per tank because of leaks in my soft return lines between the injectors. Those would be my first guess. It's not really a good idea to drive the car with fuel spilling onto the hot engine, although it never stopped me

doubt it would ever start a fire... i'd be more worried about the effects on the environment and maybe my coolant hoses :)  oh and the smell coming into the cabin when i turned my heat on...    mad headaches and have to drive with the windows down  :(

wish there was a diesel additive to stop the leak!

Ditto on the injector return lines, most likely candidate. If you can get a piece of the hose it is super easy to replace just cut to length and push on the barbs. You can replace all four of the lines and the one to the IP in 10-15 mins you will need about 18 in of hose. Cheers Dan

Got the car home and looked at it a little more. It was coming from the spare return from the #1 injector. The plug apparently came out of the end of the short piece of hose. I plugged it off and took it to my mechanic just to let him have a look and make sure. He removed the short piece of hose and gave me the proper plug. He also checked out the hard lines as well as the rest of the return lines and everything else was fine. Some of the return lines are starting to wear a bit, so I got a lentgh of hose from him to replace the return lines some weekend. Total cost: $5.
