vacuum line behind glove box

i pulled the glove box out of my 93 Golf to get at the blower motor and resistor. I discovered a braided hose (vacuum line?) coming from the centre console to the passenger side with the broken end of a plastic fitting in it. Anyone know what this is?

Oh yeah, lots of stuff. The centre console that houses the heater controls is missing. As are the ash tray and lighter, def switch, AC controls (at least two refrigerant lines are broken.) The heater blower is hotwired to an unanchored steel toggle. None of the dash lights work tnd there's about a pail of sand and gravel on the driver's floor.
Earlier this week I spent a few hours chasing random flashing lights, (alarm,) tail lights that wouldn't shut off, (PO had disassembled the light switch and reassembled it incorrectly,) and a mysterious no-starter for a day. Not even a click.
It sure seems like a mess right now, but the price was right, and included a spare engine and tranny, to "repair" the non-running one. Turned out two glowplugs were burned out, not the broken timing belt and mashed valves that PO had warned of. :lol:
I took it round the block. Having never driven a 1.9 diesel, I had nothing to compare it to, but it sees pretty peppy. Some black smoke when I floored it, clean the rest of the time. Steering, brakes and suspension all feel better than the POS ford escort I had before. I'm looking forward to taking car of this car.
Still need to change all the belts, flush brake and coolant lines, new filters.
Anyone got some console parts in my area?

So I traced that vacuum line to a green plastic pipe which goes through the firewall to a small vac manifold in front of the brake booster. The free end looks like it might have attached to a round unit about 2 1/2" dia. behind the blower motor. Maybe some AC part? Anyway, I plugged it with a screw for now.

It's probably used for the AC controls (if your car has AC). If not, maybe central locking (it uses vacuum and it sucks) if your car has this option.

that sounds like a real hack job of a wiring harness. The good news is there are a few 1.9TDs in the yards in your area so getting a harness shouldn't be too hard.
I would suspect that the line is for AC but I don't know for sure

I think the vacuum line's probably for AC too.
Can anyone ppoint me to some u-pick yards in the Toronto area I might try for parts? The only one I know is Standard auto wreckers and they didn't have any 1.9's last I looked.

The vacuum line runs to the recirculation flap actuator on the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing (right hand side under dash). The electric solenoid under the hood controls it, the solenoid is operated by the recirc button beneath the heater controls.

Look them up and call ahead. Erin didn't have any turbo diesels last time I was there but the time before had 2 or 3
There is always Cookstown auto wreckers but they are a fair drive and I personally find them expensive, but I'm a cheap ass

I going to try to get this vac line reconnected in an effort to get all the systems, except a/c, running. The air recirc. actuator is a useful one when I'm passing the rendering plant. :shock:
I thought of drilling the point where the barb broke off of the actuator and glueing something in the hole, (maybe something tapered for a tight fit?) that I can then push the vac line back onto. Any suggestions as to what that piece might be.
Or any alternative ideas?

I have had to do this repair before. What i did was i drilled and taped a hole into the actuator, and threaded a small piece of steel tubing and screwed that into the actuator. You can also epoxy it after to make sure it dosent leak.

Nice. I guess I'm going out to buy a tap and die set. It's probably cheaper than buying more singles and I'll always have the right one.
While I'm shopping, anyone know where I can get a diesel compression gauge and adapter in Toronto?
