1997 TDI?
« on: October 01, 2007, 06:06:38 pm »
Hello,
I just went to look at an 04/1997 Jetta with what was claimed to be a TDI.
Once I got there however it seems that this is just a regular 1.9 IDI Turbo diesel. Can anyone confirm?
Sadly the engine code was unreadable.
As I understand it both IDI and TDI were available in 1997 in Canada.
Thanks,
RJ

the only '97 tdi in N/A that i'm aware of is the passat with the 1Z engine.

that is definitely not a TDI (note spaceship on top of pump.  TDI looks kinda like n/a pump with a black cable harness going from the top)

nice try though (to seller)

couple give aways...

The pump is the most obvious....but lets say someone had taken it to an "m"TDI...

Next give away...the valve cover...
the 1z/AHU that would be in an MK3/B4 TDI has a "wavy" front to its valve cover, whereas the AAZ and all IDI's are straight across on the front of them (they do share the stud "lock down" for the valve cover attachment though.

Next give away...would be the injectors...TDI injectors are very "thin" and "tall" in appearance with the much fatter (larger body diameter) shorter IDI injectors.

Also...you'd want to look for one injector that is taller than the rest....the number 3 injector is the tallest on the TDI motors...

All else fails...the engine code should be on the timing belt cover for identification...if not, can always check the block or the back of the block...but its def. an AAZ IDI TD

Nice try (as already mentioned) on the sellers part though...good thing you asked!

Thanks guys,
Kind of ironic thing happened today. On my way home from looking at turbo diesel motors, my turbo diesel appears to have had a catastrophic failure:( Left us stranded on the side of the road. We just finished towing it home....
There was this crunch noise and then the engine suddenly stopped. Right away I put the clutch in so I can coast to a pull out and I'm thinking "timing belt snapped".
While waiting for my wife to pick us up I whipped the valve cover off and checked all my timing marks. I brought all my tools in case I found a diesel motor I wanted.
All the marks lined up so nothing slipped or jumped. Engine turned over fine by wrench on the crank pully. So then I'm thinking something in the pump must have let go. I just put it in yesterday after my other pump sprung a leak. see http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=10607

So I feel brave and try to start the car after it's cooled off a bit. With the pedal down 1/2 way it starts! But as soon as I put load on it it stalls. Feels like timing to me but I can't be sure untill I borrow the timing tools again or the set I ordered finally arrives.....

not on an AAZ motor :) It'd use a 020 style tranny with the standard cable clutch...more specifically...the nasty "self adjusting" clutch cable...

If it was a 1z/AHU TDI found in the MK3...it'd be a 02a style trans (02j diff) w/ hydraulic clutch :)
