I installed the rebuilt pump yesterday and se the timing with my ASE dial to:initial 2.5mm=.098
then 1mm= .093
OEM time .83-.93= .0326-.0366
then timing mod to 1mm=.093
correct?
Then I filled the ipwith fuel and cranked but only fires evry 4-5 revolutions, smokes alot dies, willnot remainrunning. So I retimed and set to OEM timing.034, cranked and the same problem. I thought that it might not have enough fuel in the pump so I craked the injectors and was getting fule at each injector.
The thing that i am supicious about is that the long ipn htat screws into the dial seemed too long and could not get the dial in far enough to tighten the lock screw so I cut about 1/4 in off of the end could this be any problem?

I think you are way off actually... as I recall the stock setting of 1.00 mm translates into 0.039 inches...
1 inch = 2.54 cm....
If so your timing is super advanced and your engine will not run well at all !
Are you:
1) getting the engine exactly at TDC
2) ensuring the camshaft is perfectly at TDC using the cam lock and feeler gauge shims as required, loosening the cam sprocket if needed
3) rotating the engine backwards (CCW) until the dial gauge stops moving
4) zeroing the gauge while making sure it has a mm or so preload
5) rotating the engine forward (CW) to exactly TDC and then taking the reading ??

sorry the 93 was a typo .039 is what was ment. I have and used the cam lock and the ip sprocket lock pin also.
And steps 1-4 were followed.

sounds like you are out 180 degrees. Depending on your year you may have the timing injection pump off 180 degree. There is a small mark on the inside of the gear. Make sure that is lined up with the mark on the housing. If not take the pin out of the injection pump and move the injection gear 180 degrees.

do you mean the timing mark that is stamped into the side ip gear? or is there one on the inside of the gear?

BTW... the possibility that you are 180 degrees out only exists if your pump sprocket has two locking pin holes... if you only have one locking pin hole with a locking pin in it *and* the engine is at TDC *and* the cam slot is aligned with both cam lobes on #1 pointed up you are in the right space.

the sprocket came from the old ip not the rebuilt one.

yup sounds like he's 180 degrees out ... set the crank to TDC
then put the locking pin in the IP pulley and make sure your Cam is on CYL #1 ( both valve closed and the cam lobes are UP ) then do your timing of the IP ... and set it to .032" ( depending on which guage you're using)

I just checked and the lobesare facing up and cam lock plate is in and the IP pully lock is in and crank is at TDC. I dont know what is going on. Maybe I should put the old pump back on and let leak.

It's a thought... would certainly help narrow down the issue.
Did you rebuild the pump or someone else ??

Should I put the old one back on to see if it runs on that pump?

Did the diesel pulse coincide with the compression stroke @ #1?

How could I check that

It turns out that the fuel that was in the pump ran out and there was air in the fuel supply line. I purged the air from the line and it started but idled like crap, a little better when i pulled the cold start but would still idle start shaking the rev then back to idle. I thought that it might have been residual air in the pump so I took it for a test run at first it hesitated but then evened out so gave it some fuel and it ran like a bat out of heck. It felt great but then it started overfueling on its own my temp went up and it felt like the throttle was stuck open but the throttle would return but not the rpms so I shut it down. now it will only start but no throttle the cable is connected and the return spring is working What now?? Did I kill the pump
