Block prep. Acid dip or Spray booth?
« on: September 30, 2007, 07:59:01 am »
Which one works better?  Machine shop has a Lg spray both that rotates the parts and hits them with hot degreaser.  Would a acid bath / dip clean better?

Howdy,

The blocks I've had dipped (mostly VW gassers) often ended up with crud in the galleys,  requiring a flush of the oil passages.  And I'd still wash it down very well with lots of soapy water,  dry and mist with a light oil,  before re-assembly.

I've not come across the spray booth system--sounds cool,  and less likely to have small particles floating around in the dip-tank (from previous tanked blocks,  cranks,  heads,  etc.)

What shop is this?

Side note--heard a bridge is closed down in your part of Maine.  Some pretty rotten bridge structures up here should be closed!

Robbins Auto parts.

Have not heard about the bridge.  I remember the one from 95 that was being worked on for like 2 years up your way though.
You guys have a ton of deer up your way.   Do any hunting?

Lousy with deer up around here!

I went bow hunting last season,  with some REAL bow hunters.  I hit several trees--dead center.

The buggers ate large sections of my garden this summer(deer not bow hunters),  till I put up a fence.  Tossed my coffee mug at one,  hit it right in the hinder.

Robbins seem to know VWs?  Most shops around here know Chevy and Ford,  watercooled VWs not so much.  Though there are 2 very good aircooled shops--so clean and neat,  nicer than my living room.

I'm going to stop by this week and ask their opinions on block/head cleaning options--I'll post what they suggest.

Pulling apart my 1.6 TD for rebuilding this week.

Later,
