ANOTHER! AAZ broken timing belt!!!!!!!!

Mine was running about 50kmh when the belt broke, not holding out a lot of hope that I'll get away without pulling the head.
Since the head's probably coming off, and I have some 1.6 parts in stock, I'm thinking the garret T3 instead of the k14 (Got 2 t3's on the shelf) or maybe the k24 (got two still in cars). I want the K14 for a 1.6 I want to build for the last purchase, a two door '91 golf with an NA engine.
I'm also wondering if anyone knows if the cam out of the 1.6 will work/be an improvement or not. Head's probably coming off this weekend.......
Car is a mk 2 jetta. With this collection of parts, which turbo and cam would you use?

1.6 cam with the K14 on a 1.6TD, not NA.

Yea, got that part figured out, got 4 1.6TD engines here in various states of disrepair. Going to (eventually) biuld one of them to replace the NA in the golf. Want to scoop the k14 for that project.
I'm really asking about the 1.9.........
T3 or K24? 1.9 cam or 1.6 cam? Pretty sure I saw a chart one time that listed lift for the two cams, but not duration. Can't find it......
Car is already straight through on the exhaust with lots of gear......

The difference between the 1.6 and 1.9 cam is negligible (if there is any). Maybe you could try both and give us the low down.
As far as turbo goes, the K24 and T3 are pretty much the same with no real up or down to using one or the other. IMO the T3's wastegate is more reliable but the K24's compressor housing is smoother.

Got into it today. Broken belt caused by siezure of the tensioner. Pulled the cam to see if I was going to be lucky enough to leave the head on, don't think so . One cam follower is wrecked, and I think the valve under it is bent. Going to have to measure to be sure, but I think it's down a hair compared to the rest. Had to quit for the day, other projects on the go. I'll get back at it in the morning..........
Are these things going to be unhappy with a used cam follower, or do I need a new one (or 8!)

ditto . at this point , remove the cam and poll the followers out ... any that stick are "punched through" by the valve stems ... replace them , re install the timing belt / tensioner and try turning the engine over by hand ,, if it now turns without clunking , make sure everything is timed properly and try firing it up....

Screwed in the adaptor from mycompression tester and put some pressure to the suspect cylinder, cam out of head. Leaked like a sieve, so I know there's a valve bent. Pulled the head, headed for the local rebuilder in the morning. Probably a good thing it's apart, there's some small cracks starting in the precombustion chamber inserts.
Pistons look good, can see the point of contact in a light carbon deposit, no damage. Turbo is in good shape too.

Yup. Got small cracks between the valves, not a problem. Small cracks in the inserts I'm not happy about. Pretty sure the exhaust valve on #1 is leaking, but we'll see. At least I know the head neede to be pulled! Easy to check for leaks when you pull the schrader valve out of the compression tester!

I think the local fuel injection guy is trying to take me for a ride. Dropped the injectors off yesterday to have them checked, told them if the nozzles are bad replace them. Keep in mind the car ran great, started well, minor smoke. Good car until the belt broke!
Got a call today, called them back when I got home from work, they're trynig to tell me nozzles are NOT available anywhere for this injector, can't get them anywhere. Existing ones are junk. Can get me complete new injectors for 132$ each........
I told them don't do ANYTHING until I get back to them.........
Are AAZ injectors that oddball? Maybe I have something odd in this engine? They look to be a little different than the ones in my 1.6 engines.
Will injectors from a 1.6TD fit/work in this engine? I have a set I could throw in until I get someone else (Giles maybe?) to look after them. I'm thinking I should just pick them up and pay for the clean and check!!

Got the head back today, machine shop went overboard, 8 valves, 8 cam followers, 4 precups, etc, etcc, etc..
Valves needed to go, not sure I needed that many cam followers!!!!
Precups were cracked, knew that when I sent it in. 750 bucks did all the work,(657 plus tax, total 749) supplied all the parts, including the gaskets and head bolts.
One major complaint, they sent me a three notch gasket when I made a point of sending the one notch gasket I took out with the head.
How much compression will I lose if I use a 3 notch where there should be a one notch?

you won't notice the difference except on really cold days ( just double glow) ...

Guess the three notch gasket isn't hurting me, still shows about 480psi across all 4 cylinders. Car is back together and running, left the K14 on it for the time being, didn't have a GOOD turbo off , both my t3's are showing sloppy shafts. THey were both off running engines, but I think they need to be gone through before putting them on another engine. Does anyone make a return line for the t3 with the banjo fitting on the end? or do I need to make one myself? Are the older k24's an easier swap? haven't looked at the return lines on those yet, they're still in cars.
