Piston Rings

I finally started taking the 5 cylinder apart tonight to take a look at the pistons. I only had time to pull one out, but the oil consumption problem became obvious. It appears that someone put standard rings on oversize pistons (3mm end gap). The top ring was broken, and had .2mm of ring side clearance. What would cause this? There doesn't appear to be any scoring of the sides of the cylinder. Does any one know of a source of grind-to-fit rings ( no end gap)? Or do you think I really need new pistons and rings?

i wouldn't get new pistons. just mike everything up to make sure its within spec, and slap in some total seal piston rings. it will really decrease the likelyhood of blowby in the near and distant future.
make sure to check for ovaling too. maybe show us some pics if you can?

I had the bores checked today, they're still round, but Total Seal doesn't have a third oversize with a stainless steel top ring (just cast). Any other ideas?

buy the rings from myke_w on here (goetz), and have him ship them to Total Seal. they will machine the 2nd ring and then ship them back to you. at least that is what i did. i can't wait to try my motor out once everything is complete.
it was fairly pricey, but totally worth it. oh yea buy some of their quickseat dry lube. it helps seat the rings faster (just ask hillfolk'r)
