d24 twin turbo
« on: September 26, 2007, 03:47:05 pm »
Hi all!

a friend of mine bought a 240 diesel N/A last weekend. It really sounds great when you are used to an 1.6. However since it is non-turboed we like to fix at least one turbo on it. Therefore I have a few questions;

1. Probably the N/A doesn't have the oilsquirters and the sodium valves, will this make any difference if we turbo the thing and will keep the EGT equal to the non-turboed version?

2. I assume that the outlet off an 1.6 idi will fit 1.9 id version. Is it possible to fit 2 outlets of the 1.4 tdi (3 cyl) on the 2.4 engine?

Hope anyone could give us some info!

Grtz,

Ruben

There is no point to two turbos on an inline engine. A single is more efficient and VNT turbo technology has made twins completely obsolete.

Hi!

The benefit of 2 small turbo's (k14) would be

1. enough turbopressure @ low revs
2. and therefor much torque @ low revs
3. less smoke
4. 2 * k14 would be cheaper then one big VNT turbo

Grtz,

Ruben

1. enough turbopressure @ low revs: The VNT can provide even better boost at low revs due to less rotating mass to get moving and more efficient use of the exhaust energy.
2. and therefor much torque @ low revs: VNT can do this more efficiently.
3. less smoke: Thats true of ANY turbo system that boost quickly.
4. 2 * k14 would be cheaper then one big VNT turbo: Not true. Single turbo means less fabrication, less parts, less weight and less overall cost. My VNT turbo cost US$125 (used) and I spent about $60 in parts to mount it onto my stock exhaust manifold.

Your going to want to put oil squirter's in your block if you are turboing it. Most of the parts you a looking for are available from the Volvo 740/760 Turbo Diesel 1985-86 in the states. That should have the Turbo exhaust manifold Garret T3 (Stock on D24T's, and defiantly adequate ) and the TD Fuel Injection Pump. And anything else I'm forgetting...

The main problem aside from the Oil squirter's in the block in the Turbo oil drain line. The oil pan in the 740/760 TD's has setup for the drain line in it already, but that oil pan does not fit in the 200 series Volvo. The D24T I have in a 200 Series actually is a combination of the two Oil pans. The Oil drain line hole was cut out of the 740/760 TD pan and welded into the 200 series pan.

It is an awful lot of work, but as you may already know Turbos make a huge difference on these engines. I would recommend it.

Good luck, come back with any more questions.

Hi Eli!

thanks for your answers. My thougts were that if your EGT remains below standard temp (which could be possible by turbocharging the engine with 2 turbos) there is no use for the oilsquirters. Or am I thinking the wrong way?
Have you fitted the squirters?

Greetings,

Ruben

You know, I am actually not sure if two turbos would decrease the EGTs enough that you would not need oil squirters.

Though, if I where going to do it I think I would want Oil squirters either way. More cooling cant hurt, can it?

I have never fitted oil squirters. I am using a D24T block. I had to replace some of the squirters but that is much easier.

Good luck, lets keep this rollin.
