My GTD's using a little water..........
« on: September 25, 2007, 01:36:00 pm »
Every 1200 miles or so the low water light comes on. The expansion bottle is almost empty and it takes about a litre or so to refill it. Its not going into the oil. Anyone got any ideas?

You may have a leak that only appears under max pressure and thus only excretes steam and leaves no wetness. Check round base of rad for dampness especially seams.
Filler cap could have crud behind a valve. Remove and clean.
Look for limescale deposits...

There is still some oily crude in the water system from when the oil/water cooler ruptured and leaked oil into the system. The whole expansion bottle and cap has been replaced twice, but you would know it as its totally black with sludge!

Its had:-

New water pump and gasket
new thermostat housing and thermostat (washer inc)
new expansion bottle x 2
oil/water cooler
radiator poressure tested

compression tested

only thing i thought was leaking water through the heater core, but I aint getting water inside the car.

Its been doing this now for over 40,000 miles and I still cant track it down, its getting no worse - but no better either!

I may have to use the swearword - RADWELD!

I had a leak under that 'S' shaped hose from the water pump. It only leaked a spray under pressure and directed towards the block .It left no trace. Only found it by chance  ...by ear actually

That was for my G40 - You can buy a hall sender replacement kit for £107 +VAt from VAG or a brand new dizzy for £81.40 + VAT. So I ordered a complete new Dizzy. Means the car is going to have to be timed and setup again. But it also means that a few things can be tweaked when its on the rollers!
