Successful weekend

Friday started with a 10am-6pm class in the machine shop, but thankfully it was cut short and so the troops were assembled to revive a classmate's 1992 1.6D which had blown an oil fitting and seized on the highway. He had just picked up a running Jetta 1.6TD with a rusted body, but had some electrical issues and died 15 blocks from his apartment. While engine hoists were rented and tools gathered, a friend and I redid the grounds on the donor and jumped it and drove it the rest of the way. Then, 6 of us attacked both cars and had everything ready to be pulled, minus the inner CV bolts, by Friday night.

Saturday I spent quite some time undoing the CV bolts while the rest of the crew wielded crowbars and the Jetta was stripped of useful parts. The Golf's knackered 1.6D was pulled and driven in the trunk of the Jetta, followed by the removal of the Jetta's 1.6TD. Unfortunately prior commitments forced me to leave early (leaving no more truly knowledgeable VW owners), only to get a phone call later that evening that after bolting down the engine, the right inner CV wasn't fitting properly... only to remember that mk2's had either 90mm or 100mm drive flanges. (insert expletive)

Sunday morning, I arrived and started hooking up all electricals, coolant lines only to have the cops show up (we were working in the street) because someone had complained. Thank god they didn't drive by on Saturday as one of our 'workers' was jumping on the roof of the Jetta with a crowbar, hammering away at the useless sunroof. Either way a warning was issued, but they were nice enough to not force us to move it into the parking garage as the car wasn't driveable. While priming the IP, a few fuel return lines were leaking (ok, gushing diesel) and replaced. We couldn't figure out why it wasn't starting only to realize the stop solenoid wasn't hooked up properly. A few more cranks and the thing fired up beautifully. We still have a few more things to fix, but one lesson was learned... the downpipe exhaust clamps are a B I T C H.

Some pics of the stripped out Jetta were taken, none with a decent camera, but clear enough to see it sitting on it's axles on the street. I'll see if I can assemble everyone's pics. We'll definitely try to get pics of the last few steps in order for it to run properly... still needs new brake lines all around and a used master cylinder is ready to go in.
