what engine is this starter for?
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:02:47 pm »
I bought a starter from autopartsonlinecanada and they sent the wrong one, its been almost 2 months and calling and other BS and still no go with my refund. If it can work on my car I will just keep it or just sell it to someone. The starter on my car has a shaft sticking out of the starter gear and on this one there is no shaft. Pictures work better so here is one I took.

thanks guys

I see part of a VW part number under the Bosch sticker in the picture (020 911 024 A perhaps ??)... that might help us track it down.

Off the top of my head I vaguely remember that:

 * starters for automatic trannys generally don't have the bushing inside the tranny and so don't have the extended shaft
* there are shaftless versions of the starter for the manual tranny starter (so called "improved design"... you've done a test fit ??  What doesn't fit ??

The part number will be the clincher if you can read it...

part number is 020 911 024 A and I have looked it up in ETKA and it doesnt say anything other than starter and 1.8kW. I havent done a test fit cause I havent had to take the starter out, if anyone actually knows if it fits I might just keep it as a backup, my old starter gave me problems last winter.

Did you actually try to install it? I think you will be surprised to find it fits and it is a much better starter then the older ones with the long nose that requires a bushing...
Bosch updated some of the older starters to this design, no more brass bushing inside the bell required to support it, much stronger sounding motor and better cranking it is basically a tdi starter motor designed to fit the older motors
