Well. what can i say? It was the Annual Uk Polo Show and I had been preparing my G40 to take along for the first time. (the 2 previous years it hasnt been ready to take or something has broken just a week before and make it not roadworthy!) So this year after months of checking everything and cleaning and polishing everything to within an inch of its life. The big day came, hitch up the trailer. I meet up with a bunch of other Scottish Polo guys and headed off to the show. We all drove towards the main Motorway. Got to the big roundabout to join the motorway and being at the back of the convoy nobody realised when I didnt join them on the carriageway. The car had stalled at the roundabout and refused to start. Lucky one of the guys was behind me and hung around until the cops showed up to help us push the car and the trailer off the roundabout and into the emergency layby. Tried fixing it at the side of the road, but with no luck. So got on the phone to one of the guys in the convoy to come back and pick up the trailer and they could keep heading south and I would get my dad to bring the GTD down to me. 1 1/2 hours later my dad showed up with the GTD. Moved all the tools and the sleeping bags and the tent over into the boot of the Golf. By the time I left I was a good 2 hours behind the rest of the convoy. I left my dad at the side of the road with the Polo and instructions to get it towed home (by the time he showed up with the GTD i had dignosed a faulty hall-sender in the dizzy - but the RAC tow truck guy said incorrectly that my alternator wasnt charging the battery! What a cock!) So I set off after the convoy and phoned them to see where they were and where would be best to try and catch them by. I had 256 miles to make up to the service station mentioned and they had 2 hours on the road on me! To say I was nipping on and taking no prisioners was an understatement! I didnt stop until the service station my mates had mentioned. I got there just after 5.05pm (after leaving Dunblane at about 2pm) after doing 256 miles in 3hours and 5 minutes - with no rest stops. I pulled off the carriageway into the service area to see the line of Polo's parked up and they were all just getting out of the cars.
I stayed in convoy all the way down at 70 without any problems. By the time we got back I've done 840miles on just £70 of fuel.
Maybe i'll just plan to take the GTD next year..............
Leave it to the workhorse to pull you out of trouble!
i had dignosed a faulty hall-sender in the dizzy -
Well there is your problem right there.
Compression Ignition FTW!!
Just need to try and find a replacement dizzy for it now! Which is going to be expensive and a long hunt!

Why can't you pinch a hall sender from something more common and use that?
Hall sender and Dizzy is specific to the Py & 3F engine code in the 1991-1994 Polo's! Dont think I already though about that!

Does this make sense?...
