1.9 head?
« on: September 17, 2007, 11:33:29 pm »
Hey,

I'm thinking of putting the 1.9 head onto my GTD..

I'd be running everything the same apart from the head so would there be any advantages or dis-advantages?

cheers

Is the any advantage of any top/bottom/full 1.9 engine over the GTD?

do some searches on 1.9 head with 1.6 block.  the 1.9 head flows better, but the compression ratio will drop enough to make cold starts smokey and rough, even with a good engine.  Chrissev and Malone have both tried it.

as for going with a 1.9 block and a 1.6 head, the head will be the bottleneck.  definitely a lot more torque than with the 1.6 though.  wonder if the CR would go up, and if so by how much?

just for the record chrisrevs franken engine had bent valves and such which is why it smoked so bad on cold starts.  malone really made alot of points that cold starting wasn't bad on his car and he ran a 3 notch hg.

I've built 2, malones and another customers, cold starting is a bit of a problem, malones motor had some weird stuff go on, I tore apart his old head about a month ago, and I think i know why it was smoking like a chimney, the valve guide seals pretty much disintegrated, how or why I don't know, doesn't make any sense, I put brand new ones in when I rebuilt the head. Regardless his motor would still miss on cold start, he had even lower compression due to deck modifications on the head.

The other customers engine had about 240,000 kms on it, it also had a hard time starting in the cold, about the same as malones, didn't smoke as bad, but still smoked white at idle until it warmed up.

Both sounded BADASS though

When you say "cold starting" what do you mean cold?  I live in Georgia, and it RARELY gets below 20F in the winter.  Is it possible to start this configuration in this type weather?  Most of the year it's doesn't get below 40F.  My Powerstroke smokes a bit when it's 20F out.

aaz head options

I'm also considering the aaz head for my 1.6 TD rebuild. Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket heads? The VW heads are obviously rare here in the US, especially far from Canada. I'd like to know if anyone has used one (and what brand) successfully in a modified powerplant, i.e porting and high boost.
Thanks, Derek
