AC -> non-ac 1.6TD thread
« on: September 16, 2007, 08:26:12 pm »
okay... so for the last long little while I've been trying to successfully remove the AC compressor to my TD and run a crank-wp-ps-alt v-belt system

over the weekend a few rabbit guys and dieselheads came across this guy giving away these rabbits.. some gas, some diesel, etc.

anyways. I located the non-ac alternator bracket

here's a few threads I've researched that have very valid information regarding this frequently asked subject.

on top of which, my question is.....
on the early rabbits, I managed to take the bracket off with the pump on.... but can the AC bracket be removed in the same manner? are the bolts to remove/install the bracket accessible? ( I would presume so )

it also looks like I'll have to rebuild one of my alternators here and get it wired with the W terminal. so I would also presume that this is an easy job for an alternator shop.

is there anything that I may be missing here or overlooking?

ok. I checked out the photos, If I remove my a/c compressor and rotate my alt. down it's great! BUT... Is the adjuster a completely different one? the arm that my alt. used to mount to on top is removed but cannot be moved to the bottom, so I only have one bolt holding the alternator, and I know that will not work. any input? maybe some photos of a non a/c car with power steering. some photos with the radiator hose out of the way would be a huge help. thanks

 but I want to know if there's any problems getting access to the mounting bolts for this bracket because they're right below the injection pump..

I just deleted the a/c compressor and bracket, and p/s because my vanagon doesn't have it.  I got a na a/c no p/s v belt and bob's your uncle.  I don't remember the length, but I can measure it if anyone needs to know.  This is a 1.6 TD in 50 deg vanagon mounting position.

Edit:  Looking at the pic I think I only deleted the p/s.  a/c was never there.  Sorry for the confusion.

I just deleted the a/c from my 1.9 AAZ golf today.    Two of the lines were sheared and It's my winter car so...  This may prove to be less successful.  I changed the waterpump double v-belt pulley for a idler pulley (terminology?)  The downside is that the  ribbed side of the belt will run on the  flat surface of the idler pulley.  I think it will not be good for longevity.  I'll post a pic of that as soon as I can.

Here's the setup for non a/c as referred to in the last post.

1.9 aaz

The tensioner pulley goes in where the empty bend is.  The belt is a p/s non-a/c multi rib
