IP rotor pump and head gasket leaks ?
« on: September 16, 2007, 12:38:52 pm »
Does anyone know if the "O" ring on the I.P. rotor head can be replaced while the pump is still installed on my truck? is there gonna be little parts flying out when pulled apart? I would like to know what i'm in for before i do it! I've never pulled the back off before so i don't know what to expect?
  thanks Duane

IP rotor pump and head gasket leaks ?
« Reply #1 on: September 16, 2007, 01:02:12 pm »
I had this problem on my gramas car 2 weeks ago. I ran the car off of 1/2 a gallon of ATF then I let it sit for two days. Then after about 30 miles it stopped leaking and so far so good.

I know that doesn't answer your question but it can buy you some time.

Follow the instructions in Andrews thread TO THE LETTER, or there will be little parts flying everywhere... all over your garage or inside the pump itself, and then you are in for some *real* fun !!

The O-ring itself is dirt cheap.

well thanks guys for all the info! I did try the ATF trick that Tyler (burn your money) recomended and i did do some more driving my truck around i put about 60 miles on it! seems like the ATF is working it was wet behind my pump but no steady drip like there was! not sure if maybe it stoped from heat expansion? I'll try it again after work tomorrow to see if it is still stoped leaking the way it was when i left it tonite! well till then stay tuned to the same bat channel! L.O.L.!!
 thanks Duane

I would be interested to know if the ATF stopleak stuff sold to combat leaky auto trans' would be even more effective at stopping the leaks. I know that I have used it in a couple of domestic transmissions and it has worked well. Even if you just filled the IP with it and let it sit then drained it out it might work on stubborn leaks. Just a suggestion. Cheers Dan

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  I hate automotive snake oil.  There, I said it.

However, if I was in the middle of a desert with no tools or o-rings, I might be inclined to try a bottle or two of power steering sealer on a leaky pump... it's designed specifically to expand rubber seals and is made by quite a few reputable manufacturers... Lucas, for example.  Have no idea how well it burns so it might be a "sit overnight of for a couple days then drain it" kinda thing.

I've never tried it myself and probably never will as I'm a reseal from scratch kinda guy... but your mileage might vary !
