My GTD - UK car :D
« on: September 12, 2007, 07:09:40 pm »
Hey there im a new member but have been lurking for quite some time

Here is my mk2 GTD. Its my daily drive and i havent done too much to her because i dont want to detract from the GTD originality too much.

This is how she was looking at ed38 time :-

on standard steels painted black with plastic trim rings to immitate polished lips.

And after finding some banded steels <3 for sale on ed38 i could resist the temptation. So this is how she currently sits.

7x13 on the front and 7.5 x 13 on the rear, they are GL and CL spec steels that have been banded. They dont look very streched in the pic but they are 175/60 falkens

The engine spec is currently : the standard GTD intercooler set up. K14 water cooled turbo at 20psi(spikes 25psi at 120mph). Govenor mod to stop the govenor cutting the fuel as the RPM rises, pretty much as far as i can go fuel wise with adjustment on the pump. 2.5" downpipe and full side exit exhaust(exits just infront of the drivers side back wheel). and a drilled airbox. Now for that sort of spec i should be knocking on the 120hp region(correct me if im wrong?) but im going to put it on the rollers soon and see where she is at but it feels quite rapid and will eat 8vs for breakfast and that 16v on the a14 on the way home from the ed38 show  ;).

Its also on coilovers all round, radio blanking plate with a boost gauge and EGT gauge mounted in it and stereo relocated to ash tray area of the centre console.

Anyway not planning a huge amount more to do to it just a few nice touches. I am trying to buy an original GTD grill at the moment so i can have the factory item on there as when i bought it, it had a horrible(imo) quad lamp grill on it.

If anyone knows where i can get some red stripe inserts for my small bumpers(they were all broke up and manky when i bought it) I would be very happy as i really want these back on the car along with the red stripe grill.

So, what do you think?

Nice pictures. If Jake was still around I'm sure he'd like the smoke on the vid.

Intrigued by this ed38 reference I googled it:

Looked like fun; alas no Mk2 Passats

Some good news; my 82 yr old mother in law with her GTD just passed her eye test; so Govt has to wait another year to spoil her fun

Kick ass car mate, love the moody styling, mine used to look just like that  8)

As for the stripes on the bumpers, they unclip (well mine did). I just keyed them with fine sandpaper and sprayed them red with a tin of cellulose.

the front stripe on mine was brittle, so I didn't risk removing it, I just masked it off and sprayed it, turned out great

Can you explain those banded steels? Are they 'hand' made?  They sort of look familiar and yet don't. Probably look good on a Roman chariot with some blades attached

a company in holland took a set of standard golf GL steel rims, cut them in half on a lathe, put them on a jig and using a robotic welder weld in a strip of steel the circumference of the wheel. The metal is of the same thickness and quality of the standard steel. They then weld the half of rim they cut off on the lathe. That is how a steel is banded. There have been some done in the UK but have turned out badly. shoddy welding and not holding air and not balancing up properly. These wheels hold air, havent lost 1psi in 2 weeks and they balanced up perfect. The fitter told me they balanced up better than most alloys.

Apparently busy; but my guess he got irritated by incorrect posting degrading the title of this forum

now running a boost controller set at 20psi  :). Much safer than my closed off wastegate because now i cant spike at 25-30 like it would on a long WOT run before.
