I got myself a cone air filter today. i removed the entire airbox and stuck the new filter on the end of the intake hose. it sure makes the turbo a lot easier to hear. is there performance benefit to Having a cone filter installed, other than the extra sound?

i didn't really notice a performance difference with my, i think its a ractive, i'm sure there is a slight one since cone filters flow better than panel and then the turbo can breath through a 3 inch opening at the filter instead of w/e size the fender hole is. the only down side is that it sucks in warmer air.

I did some reasearch on the subject a few years back and the conclusion I came up with is that it will only be beneficial if you have a really good baffle system to isolate the filter element from the heat of the engine. Otherwise it will suck hot air from the engine compartment and hot air being less dense than cold air, preformance may suffer a bit; it's like the opposite of an intercooler. OEM paper element in some cases were even performing better than cones. I put high flow (K&N) filter cartriges in the original airbox of all my vehicles and the TD responded with more low-end torque. On the other hand, the cone will let you hear the turbo like no other system so enjoy!

with the td swap in my 81 cabby i coldnt fit the airbox that went with the td so i put a cone and made a cold air chamber with some sheet aluminum from the hardware store for 10$ it seals on the hood at the top when you close it

hey do you know the part # for the K&N cartridge filter by any chance? I asked at the parts place and they could not find it. Is it the same as any other MK2?
