funny, i was looking at this exact article last week. Seems pretty simple. I'm hearing that the ball and spring style controllers are suppposed to be the route to go. This shouldn't be too far off from the manual boost controllers you can buy these days, so i would imagine it would be alright.
Has anyone used this setup? How does it work for you?

Although I dig the regulated foot concept, I will be going with a boost controller. I figure with all the time and cash I am putting into this project it's a good initial safety measure. Perhaps as I get all the tuning and little kinks worked out I may go to FBC (foot boost control

The other reason is that on occassion, my wife will be driving the car. She tends to have a lead foot on occasion. Thats ok except she will not look at any of the guages as she drives--" UMM..sweetie, how long has that oil light been on?" "What oil light?"
So I think the boost controller would be wise in this case.
Has anyone figured out a kind of 1:1 type ajustment system with fuel delivery and the boost contoller? If you crank up the boost say 5psi, is there a coresponding fuel increase you should make? The 5 psi is just a number pulled out of the air, as an example.
On this subject, I was talking to some turbo shops about porting my turbo. They said part of the port job is to port and clean up the wastgate. I have never heard of that. What the hell is the benefit there?

I think the rason they port the wastegate is the reason non wastegated turbos with external wastegates are better. You can get less restriction to exhaust flow at higher RPM. thus allowing a smaller turbo quicker boost.

Totally agree... various people drive my car as well.... and a great reason to stick with a boost controller.
Just as another possibility that might make sense under some conditions, my particular solution is a solenoid valve in-line with the wastegate feed. Solenoid open: wastegate behaves like normal and keeps the engine safe. Solenoid closed: foot control.
Kinda like a NOS switch... you use it with care and sometimes in the heat of battle. Not that I would ever battle in my diesel... no... never.
