96 Jetta AAZ pump timing ?

I took my car to get the pump timed and nozzles put in. The mechanics software didn't have anything for this year(s). Can someone give me the specs for the timing. Also what, if any, special procedures to doing this job? Appreciate any help.

flywheel at TDC cam at TDC with the cam lock in place and lock the injection pump with the pump lock. if you never removed the gear on the injection pump you SHOULD still be timed. if you did take the gear off then you have to use a dial indicator on the injection pump to retime it

Asau is correct, if it is a 96 AAZ engine you just have to turn the engine to TDC, loosen the 3 bolts in the injection pump sprocket hub, turn the hub until the pin fits in then retighten the 3 bolts. You don't have to use a dial indicator to time this engine.
You can use an indicator if it makes you feel better, the spec is 0.87mm lift @TDC. You cannot move the pump to correct the timing as in previous diesels, it is fixed to the bracket. You have to loosen the 3 bolts in the hub and turn the hub relative to the pulley to change the timing

The pump hasn't been messed with since I got the car. Locks were used during TB change. It ran the same before and after new TB . However it starts rough even with new GP and a block heater. I have to cycle GP, crank and then pull cold start handle while cranking to get started, sometimes it has to crank several times before I get started, unless I use block heater at least 1/2 hr (depends how cold). I've tried different scenarios as far as starting I think back and it started rough in the summer. Runs excellent after warm though. I bought nozzles off Marc to put in also. I thought checking the timing and changing nozzles would hopefully solve this? I wanted to know the pump timing ranges. Anyone from Canada with a 1.9 AAZ?

Didn't see QuickTDs reply as I was typing reply. Thanks for info guys. Does my scenario sound logical? Any suggestions are appreciated!

have you done a compression test, and check the glow plugs. glow plugs first
cause they are easier to check

The glow plugs have been changed recently ( 3 were bad). The car only had 62k on it when I got it in the summer. It now has about 82k.I didn't think the compression check would be a probable cause just due to the low mileage. This is my first diesel and I've tried to learn as much as I can, usually just hanging out on the board, reading the posts.I was hoping the timing and nozzles would remedy the problem. So you think it 's more likely a compression issue?

I hope this is not the problem but it has happened to me and a number of other people/
The problem you may have is due to the crankshaft pulley being worn. It has the keyway cast onto the pulley. It wears just a bit and puts the timing out. If this is the case, you need to have it checked ASAP. Mine was running rough but once warm perfect. The pulley moved about 1/16 of an inch due to this wear and took the timing out, which put a valve through the piston and destroyed the motor.
If it is worn you will need to remove the crank and have it remachined to the new style crank pulley off of a tdi, whis has a D instead of a keyway.
If you remove the pulley and it is worn, the crank will also be worn where the keyway sits in.
Hope this is not your problem.
