running without airbox, how bad?

So i was screwing around this afternoon and i took the top of the airbox off and took out the filter. i then thought it would bd cool to fire up the engine and take the car for a spin to see what it sounded like. wow, the turbo was so much easier to hear working. will i cause any damage by running a little while without the filter and airbox? well, aside from the obvious danger of imgesting dirt of course. is there anything i can do to be able to hear the turbo as easily as i can now but not run the risk of sucking in dirt? i was thinking maybe one of those cheap 30 dollar cone air filters from cadibn tire mounted onto the hose that goes into the airbox?

My exhaust is detatched from a bit behind the cat converter, yeah, both mufflers are unhooked and in my trunj, does that count?

I knew a guy on another forum that got the smart idea of running his air intake into the cabin.  He sure could hear the turbo then but realized he couldn't drive the car with the windows down or it would keep popping his ears.

Exhaust mods are the way to go.

been using a cone style filter for six monthes...no regrets...

Even at idle, I hear my VNT just fine. 2.5" exhaust and even a muffler. I imagine your cat is what cuts your noise the most.

Yeah cats act as pretty good mufflers, especially if they are old and partly clogged. Take it off and enjoy the added power.

loud is when your driving up a mountain and your exhaust snaps off at the back of the extractors on your n/a diesel.... THAT was LOUD.

Just as a reference on how seriously the OEMs take this, if you do an initial startup without air cleaners connected on a Cummins or Detroit, you have just voided your warranty.

Wonder what they do if you run with a flashing oil pressure light while telling yourself it must be the sensor !!!!! :roll:

(sorry... couldn't resist... any given day it seems like half the people on the Vortex gasser forums are trying to convince themselves they can't possibly have oil pressure problems... must be the wiring, or the sensor, or the wrong brand of oil !!)

Well older cars arent that reliable electrically so people just tend to blame that instead of real oil pressure problem. I upgraded to a 36mm oilpump (which is standard on later MK2 TDs) and used 15w40 oil to get rid of the low oil pressure when the engine got hot. It patched the problem but I know the bearings inside the engine are worn and letting pressure out. I'll eventually have to replace them.
