The headgasket let go on my car and I'm ordering a whole bunch of new parts... timing belt, tensioner, etc...
The coolant flange on the side of the head is cracked and has been leaking slowly for quite some time. My question is, does the coolant flange have a space for a coolant temp sensor? I dont have access to the car and I can't remember for the life of me. I know the 8v gasser does, but I can't recall on the 1.6TD.
The car is a 1992 Jetta 1.6 TD, w/ a/c, if that helps at all.
I called the dealer and when he asked if its the coolant flange on the side of the head, he said there were no sensors and the part is $14. Is that the right part or am I needing one with a space for a coolant temp sensor?
Let me know, I need the part either tomorrow or the day after!! :?
Thanks guys.
well mine has 2 sensors on that flange the temp gague and the glowplug override
My 87 TD has a sensor in the flange on the side of the head
So it seems mine should have a sensor housing in it too... well, does anyone have any ideas as to where I could order this part? I have been looking for it everywhere, no one seems to have it, but plenty of people have it for sale without any sensor housings...
The part number will be on the old flange, it should be 9 digit with maybe a letter or two after.
If you cant find it PM me your chassis number, Ill try to get you the correct part number to order from your VW dealer.
Also of note is that some of the earlier water flanges where superseded by VW and will sometimes need a blanking plug to cap off any extra sensor holes. Give the part number you find to your dealer and they should be able to see if there is a supersesion.
(If your dealer is crap PM me the info!)

Order them from your dealer, not sure about the supply situation over the pond but here in the UK they are available and are not too expensive. (PM me if you are struggling, I work in a VW trade parts centre).
My 92 jetta 1.6 TD has 2 coolant flanges one faces forward towards the front of the car It has 2 sensors plugged into it. The other coolant flange is on the end of the head it faces the drivers side wheel and has no sensors on it. Hope this helps. Dan

Got any junkyard with some old VW in it? If so, get there and grab the aluminum coolant flanges off early MK2 cars (and grab an aluminum thermostat housing too). They're a good upgrade for peace of mind and they'll last forever. VW cheaped out on later MK2 and they all got plastic flanges prone to failure.
