I saw a GTD!!!
« on: February 16, 2005, 02:05:19 am »
Jake,

I saw a real VW GTD about two hours ago and was so excited I had to tell you about it. :D

Anyway, so there I was standing on a street corner in a city in southern Spain when I noticed a somewhat ratty looking 4-door A2 (I think) Golf driving towards me. Then I notice the large GTD just off center in the front grill. My jaw about dropped as I realized that one of the 'rare and nearly mythical' GTDs was driving right past me. It was a bit sorry looking, as if the owner had no idea what a special species of VW history she was driving...

Definitely not 'enchantment' caliber, and it was smoking a bit as if the engine was thoroughly run out, but it was complete and appeared largely rust and damage free. Wow I thought, Jake will want to hear about this.

But four doors...? What's up with that...!?

Cheers!

I saw some GTDs when I was in Europe too... and whoever told you they were all 2-door?   :o  (Actually I have a pamphlet for the Mk1 Golf GTD in german language, which proudly showcases a silver, four door A1 GTD.)

That's definitely the place to find 'em!  How is Spain treating you?  Sounds like a great place to visit.  I'll bet you're seeing lots of turbo diesels and lots of Seats too.  They have some pretty cool high performance TDI-powered cars in their line-up as well.

Yeah, as always I am loving Spain! :)

Last night I went out with some friends for steak and sangria, and sure enough I saw another GTD...this time a 2-dr A1. Wow! Last year I spent 3 months here and never saw one. Now I've seen two in as many days!

I don't recall what made me think that they are all 2-doors. In fact, I may be extrapolating from the GTI configuration. In any case, I was surprised to see that 4-door.

Yes, there are lots of high-zoot cars here. But there are a lot of micro cars as well that scare the daylights out of me. And a lot of 3-wheel 2-cycle pukers, too...  :P

But hey, the steak and sangria make it all worth it! 8)

Headed home tonight!  :D

What is the GTD specifically? I know of the Mk1 (i.e. Rabbit/Golf) here in Canada with L, LS, GTI, C and D trim levels.

Is a GTD like a Diesel GTI??   :?:

p.s. got any pics!? ;)

Yes, the GTD was basically a diesel-powered GTI, which came in 2-dr and 4-dr versions in Europe (never in North America). For lots of pics go to http://images.google.com/ and search on "vw gtd" (without quotes). Use the same search term in google for lots of links.

But did they have the same brakes and suspension specifications? Or did they just have different injection + intercooler?

Sorry I can't point you to a good website. I used to have one bookmarked that listed many changes from a TD to a GTD (and enve had some videos!), and IIRC there were suspension as well as engine changes. However, I can't find the reference, so we'll have to wait until someone with more knowledge chimes in.

Here's a pic of my sweet little GTD Caddy.  I got the GTD emblem from a golf in Germany and epoxied it onto my grille.  The only GTD emblazoned Caddy in North America??

Freshly rebuilt (bored .040" or 1mm over) 1.6TD under the hood, with 2.25" TT exhaust, K&N air filter and ACN code 5-speed tranny--turns only 3000 RPM at 75MPH at 10psi boost and ~750*F post-turbine EGTs!!

the mk-1 GTD don't have sway bars like the gti and not the same brakes either and no intercooler.

I just read your posting & just had to register here.

Edit: btw. it has four doors.
What is so special about the Golf GTD? I am asking, because I own one and have no idea either.

Pyro, I retired 2 weeks ago after 24 years as an Air Force pilot, flying mainly C-5s at Travis. Moron AB and NAS Rota are airfields we use in southern Spain, and I've been to each at least 100 times over the years. My wife and I really like Spain and may move there at some point (we both speak Spanish).

Blaupause, where do you live? We never got GTDs in North America and so for us they are really special - though I understand that they are not in Europe. How about some pics of your car?

In Germany. Well, I didn't realize until now, that Diesel engines are so rare in the U.S, at least in "normal" cars.
I enjoyed myself for the last few days in reading here and the
http://forums.tdiclub.com/categories.php . I liked most the stories about fueling and gearshifts, and guessing what all the English car terms mean.

It's funny thinking of a (for me) normal car as being exotic somewhere else. Although, probably the Golf GTD is becoming rarer in Europe too, since the newer ones are all TDIs.

Sorry, I have no pics at hand in the moment. Its just a 92 Golf GTD Special (the "Special" was just meaning, that some stuff was included) in black/metal effect (or however this is called in English). Its a nice car, only thing is, I may get problems someday because it has no filter and I am a bit worried that driving this car may not be longer allowed some day.

In any case, greetings from Europe to the Diesel community here.  :)
