hydraulic lifter head query...
« on: August 27, 2007, 04:43:50 am »
well, i pulled the head on my "new" 1.6TD on saturday morning to investigate what the consequences were of the crank pulley being too weak and mistiming the engine...

there are minor dents in the pistons, nothing really to worry aobout, the bottom end seems fine however closer inspection of the bearings will come soon.  my real concern is with the head.

the engine is a 1.6 but it looks like it has hydraulic lifters, a couple of which appear to be seized or something. camshaft looks ok, and the followers are not scored or dented either, but i cant turn the camshaft because 2 valves are stuck. i've never dealt with a hydro head before, only the solid lifter type with the shims, and this head appears not to have changable shims, which is why i have asusmed it is hydraulic.

so, first question: is this 1.6td head really hydraulic?

second: if so, will fixing it be a problem? is it just a case of pulling the cam off, lifting out the followers and having a look, or is there something more complex and sinister i should know?

cheers

to clarify - i've never had this engine running, just bought it weeks ago. it is not CK or CY coded, it is from a spraycoup and so was used on ag-machinery.

it has a K14 on it which i am inclined to think will be too small for my big power thirst for when this engine is in my '77 mk1. am i wrong?

i am thinking ARP raceware studs, lowered compression (maybe 18.5/19:1). what else should i do to ready this engine for big boost? is a copper HG necessary?

cheers again,

being in pakistan and owning a golf is an experience, no machinist knows about this engine so I tend to gather as much information as possible from anywhere, internet, books - vwdiesel.net ;)

The hydraulic head requires the valve stem ends to be about 35.8mm and 36mm from the deck of the valve cover, or the lifters mess up the valve timing and you end up with a hot running head.

Furthermore take out the lifters and dunk them in carbdip - it will wash out any sludge in it, then put them in some hot 10W40 engine oil and then install them with cam - then fit head the next day to make the lifters take their natural length or your pistons will have an affair with your valves, once the engine fires.

Ive redone a TD head with excellent results by this,

thanks mate. its a similar, though probably not quite as bad affair in australia - all the machine shops hate euro work, let alone a diesel vw.

your couple of dead valves could be collapsed lifters and squiggly valve stems
